Pittsburgh Panthers vs. Wake Forest Demon Deacons prediction, pick for NCAAM on Tuesday 1/27/26

Wake Forest and Pitt are living in the same ACC basement right now, and that’s what makes this feel tense. Wake is 11–9 and 2–5 in league play, still hunting traction after a stretch of close losses. Pitt is 8–12 and 1–6 in the ACC, and the air around the program feels heavier every week. This is the kind of Tuesday night where “must-have” isn’t hyperbole, it’s survival. Six o’clock at the Petersen Events Center tends to make every possession feel louder than it looks on paper. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Pittsburgh Panthers and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Pitt vs. Wake Forest prediction, preview

The texture of this matchup is volume versus violence. Wake scores 80.4 per game, but it also bleeds 76.6, so the baseline is already high-output and high-risk. Pitt’s defense is the cleaner unit, allowing 71.3 a night, and it suppresses attempts with opponent FGA at 54.7 per game, which ranks 37th nationally. The catch is Wake’s chaos is real, because 9.4 steals per game ranks 12th, and opponents are coughing it up 15.2 times per game, which ranks 10th. That combination creates “free” points without needing pristine half-court execution. Wake also fires threes in bunches, taking 27.8 per game, and Pitt’s defense is merely average at limiting makes, allowing opponents to hit 35.1% from deep. If Pitt can’t turn Wake’s possessions into single-shot trips, Wake’s offense will keep finding air.

The game still tilts on the specific names, because both teams have one clear engine and a few swing pieces. Juke Harris (G) is a true national scorer, sitting at 20.6 points per game, tied for 22nd nationally, and he’s doing it on 46.4% shooting. Nate Calmese (G) is the organizer, at 5.2 assists per game, and he’s a national top-70 guy in that category. Tre’Von Spillers (F) gives Wake the adult strength, averaging 9.3 rebounds with a physical scoring diet that keeps possessions from dying on the perimeter. The hidden Wake edge is that their defense invites a lot of opponent threes, but it contests them well, holding opponents to 30.8% from three, which ranks 57th. Pitt’s counter is more traditional, and it starts with Cameron Corhen (F) vacuuming 8.1 boards per game, including 2.9 on the offensive glass. Brandin Cummings (G) leads Pitt scoring at 13.1 per game, but this offense needs extra chances to get comfortable. Damarco Minor (G) is the connective piece at 3.7 assists, and his decision-making matters, because Wake’s steal pressure can turn a lazy entry pass into a runway dunk.

Wake Forest vs. Pitt pick, best bet

Pitt’s case is straightforward, and it’s the one thing Wake cannot fake: rebounding and shot denial. Pitt is top-50 in opponent offensive rebounding rate at 25.2% and top-50 in defensive rebounding rate at 74.8%. Wake is the opposite, sitting 307th in defensive rebounding rate and allowing opponents to grab 32.2% of their misses. If Pitt turns this into a two-shot game, it can keep Harris from detonating the scoreboard. The refutation is that Pitt has been losing even when it wins the muscle battle, because the scoring efficiency keeps cracking. Against NC State, Pitt won the glass 52–31 and still lost while shooting 36.8% from the field and 44% at the line. That wasn’t a one-night fluke profile either, because Pitt is 347th nationally in free-throw percentage at 66.3%, and opponents are shooting 76.7% at the stripe against them, which ranks 350th. In a tight game, that’s a brutal edge to give away.

That’s why I’m staying on Wake Forest +1.5. Pitt’s path requires winning the glass and then converting enough half-court shots to separate, and the recent form hasn’t supported that. Pitt is 1–4 in its last five, including a 100–59 loss to Louisville, while Wake’s 1–4 stretch includes shootout losses at Duke and at UNC that at least prove it can score in hostile buildings. The number also respects Wake’s “steal-to-bucket” leverage, because those extra possessions are exactly how underdogs steal road wins. I’d rather bet the team that can create points without shot-making perfection than the team that needs a clean whistle and clean conversions.

Here’s how I see it playing. Wake should lean into spread ball screens for Harris and Calmese, because Pitt’s defense wants to shrink driving lanes and force late-clock jumpers. Wake should also accept the math and keep shooting threes, because volume is part of how it survives road droughts. Pitt should pound the offensive glass and make Corhen the table-setter by turning misses into kick-out threes, especially with Wake allowing 27.5 opponent threes per game. The swing sequence is simple: if Wake’s guards keep the turnovers merely normal, Wake’s steal pressure will still manufacture enough extra chances. And if this turns into a late free-throw game, Wake is simply built to land punches there.

Wake Forest 77, Pitt 72.

Best bet: Wake Forest +1.5 (-115) at Pitt
