Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Penn State Nittany Lions prediction, pick for NCAAM on Monday 1/26/26

Ohio State sits in the Big Ten’s middle class with real urgency, because every home win protects March positioning. Penn State arrives 0–8 in league play, and the record reads like a siren. The résumé gap is wide, but the spot still matters, because spreads this big demand clean habits. Ohio State has lived comfortably at home, and Penn State’s youth shows up when the game tightens. A winter-storm travel week hangs over the logistics, and it’s never nothing in January. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Penn State Nittany Lions.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Ohio State vs. Penn State prediction, preview

This matchup starts with shot quality, then turns into shot volume. Ohio State’s offense grades top-25 on KenPom, and it gets there with a 55.0% eFG and a 59.8% two-point clip that ranks 13th nationally. Penn State’s defense is a red-alert profile, allowing a 56.9% opponent eFG, 57.1% on twos, and 37.8% from three. Ohio State also creates extra trips, sitting 24th in offensive-rebound rate at 36.4% and fifth nationally at 12.0 offensive boards per game. Penn State’s one real defensive stabilizer is discipline, because it suppresses free throws well, sitting 18th in opponent FTA/FGA at 0.261. That matters here, because Ohio State shoots 78.5% at the stripe, 10th in the country, and it loves points that stop the clock.

The player story fits the math, because Ohio State has multiple ways to cash out a possession. Bruce Thornton (G) drives the whole thing at 18.6 points and 4.7 assists, with a 26.5% usage rate and a 122.0 offensive rating. John Mobley Jr. (G) supplies the spacing gravity with a 75.1 three-point tendency, and the recent run has been loud, with four threes per game over his last eight. Devin Royal (F) is the margin builder, because he pairs 12.8 points and 7.4 boards with a 38.8 free-throw rate. Sean Stewart (F) is the quiet amplifier, because his 12.8 offensive-rebound rate and 4.5 block rate turn missed shots into putbacks and erase attempts at the rim.

Penn State’s offense can still hang around when it plays clean, because it ranks seventh nationally at 9.1 turnovers per game and sits 11th in field-goal percentage at 49.7%. Kayden Mingo (G) is the rare freshman who can swing possessions without needing shotmaking, leading the Big Ten at 2.25 steals per game and ranking 26th nationally. Freddie Dilione V (G) and Josh Reed (F) supply steady scoring, while Yanic Konan Niederhauser (F) gives the only true rim presence with 2.0 blocks per game. Dominick Stewart (F) piling up three straight double-doubles is the kind of form cue that keeps an underdog alive.

Penn State vs. Ohio State pick, best bet

Penn State’s cover case lives in cleanliness and refusal to donate points. If the Nittany Lions keep turnovers low, avoid fouls, and make Ohio State score through halfcourt execution, the backdoor stays open. Ohio State’s defense also doesn’t force many giveaways, so Penn State should get shots most trips. The problem is Penn State doesn’t defend either level well enough to survive a normal Ohio State night. Ohio State can win the rim, win the glass, and still sprinkle enough threes through Mobley to stretch the margin. If Penn State’s threes don’t land, the offense doesn’t have a reliable free-points lane, because its FTA/FGA sits down at 0.290.

I’m laying Ohio State -11.5, with full respect for the hook-brittle nature of this number. The market has drifted from -12.5 to -11.5, and that smells like underdog buyback more than a change in matchup truth. Ohio State should lean into paint touches and second-chance violence, because Penn State’s defensive rebounding is the soft spot behind the soft spot. Penn State should try to make this a shots-only game, because that’s the only way to keep the scoring curve flat. I expect Ohio State to build a lead on two-point efficiency and putbacks, then protect it with shot quality.

Ohio State 84, Penn State 71.

Best bet: Ohio State -11.5 (-115) vs. Penn State
