However, that also opens up the opportunity for checkdown passes to running backs, and Harvey has thrived as a receiving back. Jarrett Stidham will have his hands full against a Patriots’ defense that ranked 10th in dropback EPA during the regular season, but it just so happens that New England struggled to limit opposing running backs in the receiving game. The Patriots allowed the fifth-most receptions to opposing backs, and Harvey averaged 2.8 receptions per game during the regular season.
Harvey has cleared this mark in four of the past six games, including in last week’s Divisional Round win over the Bills. Bo Nix averaged just 6.4 yards per attempt this season, suggesting that Sean Payton’s scheme favors short passes, and I’d be willing to bet he especially leans on that with a backup in a game of this magnitude. Harvey ranked 11th among running backs in yards after catch this season, and the Broncos would be foolish not to lean into their skill players’ strengths to make it easy on Stidham.
