A potential postseason preview is on tap tonight in Central Florida. The Cavaliers (26-20, 5th in East) are looking to improve their record despite an up-and-down first half. That means taking care of business against other upper-echelon clubs. That includes the Magic (23-20, 7th in East), a young squad looking to take the next step towards contention.
Which of these Eastern Conference foes has the edge tonight? Here’s my preview, prediction, and pick for Saturday’s Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Orlando Magic matchup. The Cavaliers are 1.5-point favorites (+100) over the Magic on DraftKings Sportsbook. Cleveland is favored at -112 on the moneyline. The total for this contest is set at 226.5 points.
Cavaliers vs. Magic prediction, preview
Both of these clubs pride themselves on their defensive effort. However, the results haven’t been there so far. Cleveland and Orlando rank 15th and 14th in defensive rating, respectively. Still, that’s due in large part to several lengthy injuries to key contributors. For the visitors, Evan Mobley’s health is key. When active, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year is a two-way force. Through 40 games this season, he’s averaging 18.0 points, 8.8 rebounds and 4.1 assists. On the other end of the floor, he’s chipped in with 1.0 steals and 2.0 blocks per game.
With that being said, the main catalyst for Cleveland is none other than Donovan Mitchell. The six-time All-Star has never been better, ranking sixth in the NBA with 29.0 points per game. In addition, he’s tallied 4.8 rebounds and 5.7 assists while shooting 48% from the field. Typically, Mitchell is joined by fellow sharpshooter Darius Garland in the backcourt. However, the standout guard is dealing with a toe sprain. The Cavaliers have gone 13-7 this season in games Garland has missed.
Cleveland isn’t the only team operating at less than 100%. The Magic will be without arguably their best all-around player in Franz Wagner (ankle). To make matters worse, lead guard Jalen Suggs (knee) has also been ruled out. That puts even more pressure than usual on Paolo Banchero. The former Rookie of the Year isn’t the NBA’s most consistent star. Still, at his best, he’s a force to be reckoned with. Over 33 games this season, the power forward has posted 21.0 points, 8.7 rebounds and 5.0 assists. Unfortunately, lackluster shooting splits (45/28/76) have hurt his overall production.
Given Banchero’s erratic play, someone else may need to step up for Orlando. The likeliest candidate is offseason acquisition Desmond Bane. Over his last five games, former Grizzlies guard has produced 19.0 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game. As a unit, the Magic rank 18th in the NBA with a 115.1 offensive rating. That’s an improvement compared to previous years, but those Orlando squads were much better on defense. Finding a proper balance between those two is vital not just tonight, but going forward.
Cavaliers vs. Magic pick, best bet
Cleveland comes into this one with plenty of momentum, winning four of its last five contests. The same can’t be said of Orlando, losers in three of its last five. As previously mentioned, the Cavs have done an admirable job even with Garland sidelined. That’s not the case for the Magic, who have gone 8-9 without Wagner this season. Keeping that in mind, I’ll back the visitors in what is essentially a pick ’em.
