NHL Ice Breaker Pick for Thursday, January 22
Viktor Arvidsson First Goalscorer (+2000)
Given tonight’s limited options from the 7:00 p.m. ET slate, Arvidsson figures to end up being a relatively chalky play, thanks to his recent play, as well as his matchup. Across the last 10 games, Arvidsson ranks third in the NHL in 5v5 expected goals. The 32-year-old ranks fifth on the team in goals scored, and he has netted one in three of the past five games.
Tonight, he will face a Golden Knights team that ranks fifth in first-period goals allowed. Both of these teams have been scoring goals at will since the new year began, which makes me think this game will be quite competitive from the first puck drop. Only four of Arvidsson’s 11 goals have come in the first period, but Vegas has given up the first goal in each of its past three games. While the Golden Knights are relatively disciplined, ranking 31st in penalty minutes per game and 10th in penalty kill percentage, I’d expect some physicality, which should lead to numerous power play opportunities for both sides.
