UC Davis Aggies vs. UC San Diego Tritons prediction, pick for NCAAM on Thursday 1/22/26

UC Davis has turned the University Credit Union Center into a problem, and this is another night built for it. Both teams enter 4–3 in Big West play, and the standings feel crowded enough to punish every slip. UC San Diego walks in 14–5 with an 8–2 road mark, still winning through structure. UC Davis sits 11–7 with an 8–2 home mark, still winning through pace and poise. It’s a classic league hinge game, and the kind that decides who gets to breathe in February. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the UC Davis Aggies and the UC San Diego Tritons.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

UC Davis vs. UC San Diego prediction, preview

The math starts with how both offenses keep finding clean points, but they earn them differently. UC San Diego’s shooting efficiency is real, with a 55.3% effective field goal rate that sits top-50 nationally. UC Davis isn’t far behind at 54.1%, and it pairs that with a heavy three-point diet and real volume. Both teams are built around threes as oxygen, with each sitting around a 44% three-point rate footprint. That means the shot-quality lane is live, but the variance lane is loud too.

Now the people, because this game has teeth on the perimeter. Leo Beath (F) is the Tritons’ center of gravity at 15.7 points per game, and he just hit UC Bakersfield for 20 and nine. Tom Beattie (F) gives them connective tissue at 10.7 points, 5.5 boards, and 3.5 assists, and that ball-moving role matters here. Alex Chaikin (G) is the thermostat, sitting at 42.7% from three with an 88.9% free-throw stroke. On the other side, Nils Cooper (F) is an efficiency bully, scoring 14.4 per game on 57.0% shooting, plus 1.9 steals. Isaiah Chappell (GF) brings the microwave element at 38.9% from deep on real volume, and Brayden Fagbemi (G) pilots the pace with 4.5 assists and 2.1 steals.

UC San Diego vs. UC Davis pick, best bet

The number’s stayed tight. UC Davis can drag you into foul shots and chaos, then let the home rims do the rest. They get to the line at a top-60 rate by FTA/FGA, and they also allow opponents to live there, which keeps late possessions volatile. If UC San Diego’s threes go cold for a four-minute stretch, the Aggies can turn that into a run fast.

Here’s how I price the board. With 150.5 on the total and UC Davis typically living around 72.8 possessions, the market is asking for roughly 1.05 points per possession per team. That’s achievable, but it also assumes the ball stays out of live-ball trouble. That’s the fragility audit in one sentence, because UC Davis forces action and UC San Diego wants clean reads. Whistle risk tilts toward UC Davis value, and it tilts toward late scoring volatility either way.

So I’m leaning into UC San Diego -1.5 because it’s the cleaner shot-quality profile, and it travels. I expect their spacing to stress closeouts, because Chaikin and Aidan Burke (G) can punish late feet. I expect Beath to live in the gaps, because UC Davis’ defense gives up too many efficient looks. UC Davis should push pace and hunt free throws, because that’s how they bend games at home. I’m still riding the side that protects the ball better and defends the paint with more discipline.

UC San Diego -1.5, 78–74.

Best bet: UCSD -1.5 (-110) at UC Davis
