New Mexico State Aggies vs. Missouri State Bears prediction, pick for NCAAM on Thursday 1/22/26

Conference USA’s middle tier is a knife fight right now, and this one sits right in the scrum. Missouri State walks in at 10–8 overall and 4–3 in league, but it’s been a different team outside Springfield, going 1–6 on the road. New Mexico State is 10–7 and 3–4 in C-USA, and the home floor has been a stabilizer at 7–1 in Las Cruces. The first meeting already proved this matchup can get loud and physical, and the standings pressure is real with Liberty out front and everyone else trading elbows for positioning. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the New Mexico State Aggies and the Missouri State Bears.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

New Mexico State vs. Missouri State prediction, preview

The math has a clean shape when I run the three-lane frame. Shot quality leans Aggies, because New Mexico State has held opponents to 39.6% shooting and a 46.0% effective field-goal rate, plus just 30.4% from three. Missouri State’s offense sits at a 51.2% eFG on the season, but it’s only 31.2% from three, and that makes every cold stretch feel longer on the road. Extra possessions are almost a mirror, because both teams crash hard at roughly a 34% offensive-rebound clip, but New Mexico State has been sharper at finishing the stop, allowing only a 28.3% opponent ORB rate. Free points are where the night gets volatile: Missouri State lives at the line with a massive 0.43 FTA/FGA rate, yet it converts only 66.1% there, while New Mexico State shoots 73.7% and still sees opponents get to the stripe often. Recent form also sets the tone: Missouri State has dropped three of its last four, including a two-overtime loss at Middle Tennessee and a loss at Western Kentucky. New Mexico State just pasted Delaware 97–68 after a two-point loss at Liberty, which screams “still finding its road footing, still very live at home.”

The player layer is where the edges get names instead of decimals. Keith Palek III (F) is third in C-USA scoring at 18.0 per game, and ESPN has him tied-85th nationally, so the workload isn’t a vibe—it’s a math fact. Missouri State also has a real interior finisher in Michael Osei-Bonsu (F), who’s shooting 59.4% and sits first in the league in field-goal percentage. The swing piece is Kobi Williams (G), because he’s fifth in C-USA at 2.6 threes per game, and he already dropped 32 on New Mexico State with a 7-for-9 night from deep.

On the other side, Jemel Jones (G) is seventh in league scoring at 16.0 and fifth in free-throw percentage at .821, and that combo matters late when margins tighten. Julius Mims (F) gives New Mexico State real rim weight at 7.8 boards per game, and he just went 6-for-6 with 13 points and ten rebounds against Delaware. Anthony Wrzeszcz (G) is a clean spacing lever at 2.0 threes per game in league play, and he’s coming off back-to-back 16-point outings versus Liberty and Delaware.

Missouri State vs. New Mexico State pick, best bet

The Missouri State cover case is obvious: the Bears can win the whistle and turn this into a parade, because their free-throw volume is extreme and New Mexico State has allowed a 0.44 opponent FTA/FGA rate. If Palek’s rim pressure stacks fouls early and Williams finds two quick threes, the dog can live inside one run all night. The refutation is that this has to travel, and Missouri State’s road profile has been brutal at 1–6, while New Mexico State has banked wins at home. The total helps sanity-check the environment: at roughly a 69-possession pace for both teams, 143.5 implies about 1.04 points per possession per side, which is basically “normal efficiency.” That’s the problem for Missouri State, because New Mexico State’s defense has lived below that band, allowing about 0.95 PPP on the season, and Torvik has the Aggies’ defensive eFG number in a sturdier national bucket than Missouri State’s. Variance still breathes here—both teams take a lot of threes and the foul profile is loud—so this is medium-to-high volatility, with real backdoor risk if New Mexico State gets loose late.

So I’m playing it as a home-floor plus defense bet, not a vibes bet. New Mexico State should live in ball-screen pressure with Jones pulling two defenders, because Missouri State’s defense has allowed 1.11 PPP and hasn’t consistently ended possessions cleanly. The Aggies should also send a second wave to the glass, because their 34% offensive-rebound profile can create the extra six-to-eight points that make -6.5 feel reachable. Defensively, I expect New Mexico State to top-lock and chase Williams off clean catch-and-shoots, then crowd Palek’s touches with early gap help, because the Aggies have already proven they can squeeze shot quality without dying on the arc.

I’m laying it: New Mexico State -6.5, with a 75–67 final.

Best bet: New Mexico State -6.5 (-110) vs. Missouri State
