Arizona State Sun Devils vs. West Virginia Mountaineers prediction, pick for NCAAM on Wednesday 1/21/26

Tempe usually rewards speed and nerve, and Arizona State wants this one played like a sprint. West Virginia shows up at 12–6 and 3–2 in the Big 12, still chasing a clean road proof. Arizona State sits 10–8 and 1–4, and it needs a home win that feels earned, not survived. This matchup is a tug-of-war over the game’s pulse. Whoever wins the first five minutes usually wins the night. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Arizona State Sun Devils and the West Virginia Mountaineers.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Arizona State vs. West Virginia prediction, preview

The profile clash is loud in the pace numbers alone. West Virginia plays at 66.5 possessions per game, while Arizona State lives closer to 74.2, so the opening tempo is the first battleground. WVU’s defense is the sturdier spine, allowing 63.2 points per game and holding opponents to 40.4% shooting, which drags efficiency down possession by possession. Arizona State’s defense has bled clean looks, sitting at 53.6% opponent eFG and 55.8% opponent two-point shooting, and that’s the kind of softness that lets a road team score without living on threes. The extra-shot lane leans WVU too, with a 30.2% offensive rebounding rate facing an ASU defense allowing 31.1% second chances. The whistle lane fits the same direction, because WVU defends without gifting freebies at a 0.282 opponent FTA/FGA, while ASU allows 0.373.

The players that decide possessions line up with those lanes. Honor Huff (G) bends the floor, because 84.2% of his attempts are threes and he still hits 40.0%, so one clean stretch can change the scoreboard fast. Treysen Eaglestaff (G) is the swing scorer, and his 22 in the 72–61 win over Colorado matters because WVU needs a second punch when the arc gets crowded. Brenen Lorient (F) steadies the interior at 10.3 points and 5.1 boards, and Harlan Obioha (C) is the keep-alive piece with 41 offensive rebounds and a massive free-throw appetite when the halfcourt gets sticky.

Arizona State’s answers come in waves of creation and shot-making. Maurice Odum (G) drives the engine at 16.2 points and 4.4 assists, and he just posted 24 with 11 assists in the 95–89 loss to Colorado. Anthony Johnson (G) is the clean sniper at 44.7% from three, and he just dropped 24 at BYU. Massamba Diop (F) supplies the interior scoring at 13.3 and 5.8, while Santiago Trouet (F) quietly keeps possessions alive with 50 offensive rebounds.

West Virginia vs. Arizona State pick, best bet

Arizona State’s win path is easy to see when you picture the game speeding up. If the Sun Devils turn this into a mid-seventies possession night, Odum gets downhill early-clock, and WVU’s offense has to chase points, the home side can stack runs. WVU’s road performance has been shaky, and a couple live-ball mistakes can light the crowd and change the math. The counter is that West Virginia doesn’t need to win pretty if it wins the grind. WVU can shrink the game with defense, then steal extra shots on the glass against a defense that has given them away all season.

West Virginia should lean into a slower, screen-heavy perimeter diet because Huff’s gravity can create cleaner twos against a defense allowing 55.8% on twos. WVU should also crash hard because 30.2% offensive rebounding against a 31.1% allowance is the simplest way to score without rhythm threes. Arizona State should push early clock because its best edge is volume, and Odum’s creation only grows when the game gets loose. The swing possessions will be second-chance clusters and live-ball turnovers, not some pristine halfcourt clinic.

The board is basically begging you to choose which identity you trust. WVU is +1.5 at -110, Arizona State is -1.5 at -110, and the total sits 145.5 with the over -112 and the under -108. The moneyline pricing is WVU +105 and ASU -125. If you blend the pace to roughly 70 possessions, 145.5 implies about 2.07 combined points per possession, or roughly 1.03 per team, and that number feels far more comfortable for ASU’s preferred track than WVU’s preferred squeeze. I’m not paying for the hook when my projection already has WVU winning.

I’m riding WVU’s shot-quality suppression plus extra shots to steal this late. West Virginia moneyline, projected score West Virginia 74, Arizona State 71.

Best bet: West Virginia (+105) at Arizona State
