PSG’s Champions League title defense has been successful so far. They’re in third place in the table and are in control of their destiny, but things are tight. Only eight teams secure automatic spots in the Round of 16, and PSG are just one point ahead of Liverpool, who are ninth in the table. One slip could relegate them to the Round of 16 playoff, which makes this a nervy affair.
Sporting have acquitted themselves well in the UCL. Four points clear of elimination, they’re in a good spot to advance, but it’s not ideal to see PSG line up across from them when in such a difficult position. But this is a team designed to steal points with their attack, led by Luis Suárez (the Colombian national, not to be confused with the former Liverpool/Barcelona star), who has 15 goals in Liga Portugal play in an incredible debut season for the club.
But it’s tough to ignore the injury report for Sporting. Pedro Goncalves, the star Portuguese winger, will be absent as he rehabs a muscle injury. Back line fixture Ousmane Diomande will be out as well alongside wunderkind 18-year-old winger Geovany Quenda. It’s already tough enough to face this PSG side when healthy; a lengthy injured list isn’t doing them any favors.
PSG are as healthy as they’d hope to be, with Achraf Hakimi the only question mark after a grueling AFCON schedule in the midst of nursing an ankle injury. But they have more than enough to win this one without their star wing back. Ousmane Dembélé is playing Ballon d’Or ball, the defense is locked in, and their depth on the wings can overwhelm any defense. That’s going to be a problem for Sporting and their banged-up defense.
