Northern Colorado Bears vs. Montana State Bobcats prediction, pick for NCAAM on Monday 1/19/26

Greeley is a points room, and the stakes show up on the standings line before the opening tip. Northern Colorado sits 1–5 in Big Sky play and needs a home win to stop the bleed. Montana State comes in 4–1, but it’s also 3–7 away from Bozeman, so nothing about this spot is automatic. The first meeting matters because Montana State won 89–75 on January 1, and Northern Colorado has to live with that tape. The board is telling the same story, too: a tight spread with a 151.5 total means the market expects possessions and shot-making. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Northern Colorado Bears and the Montana State Bobcats.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Northern Colorado vs. Montana State prediction, preview

Northern Colorado wants this to turn into a sprint, because it’s built to score fast and score clean. The Bears play at 74.4 possessions per game and average 84.3 points, which is why this total lives where it does. They shoot 49.1% from the field and 36.7% from three, and the 57.4% eFG confirms it’s not just transition chaos. Montana State’s counter is that it can shoot with them, sitting at 47.4% overall and 36.0% from deep, but it prefers a calmer rhythm. The hidden separator is possession discipline, because Montana State commits only 10.7 turnovers per game. When a team plays that clean, it denies the opponent cheap runs and forces half-court execution. That matters here because Northern Colorado’s defense is strongest on the arc, holding opponents to 28.8% from three, while Montana State’s defense holds opponents to 31.4% from three. This game should live in the space between those two numbers, and whoever wins that geometry wins the night.

Denker is the heartbeat for Northern Colorado, and the recent tape is exactly why the revenge angle feels real. Quinn Denker (G) is at 18.1 points and 6.9 assists with efficiency that holds when the game tightens. He just dropped 29 points and 11 assists at Sacramento State, and that’s the kind of creation that bends a spread late. His assist-to-turnover profile stays clean enough to keep the offense out of the mud, and he also gets to the line at a real rate. Brock Wisne (G) gives him a second scorer who doesn’t need perfect spacing, because his finishing efficiency stays high. Zach Bloch (G) and Ibu Yamazaki (G) tilt the floor with three-heavy volume, so help decisions get punished quickly. Montana State’s shot-making ecosystem is steadier than most Big Sky teams, and it already proved it in the first meeting. Jed Miller (G) has the cleanest efficiency profile on the roster and already hung 24 in that January 1 win. Davian Brown (G) is the volatility knob, and he’s coming off 24 against Montana with four threes and a perfect eight-for-eight at the stripe. Patrick McMahon (F) gives them a pressure release because he can manufacture free throws, even when the arc goes quiet. Christian King (F) is the wild card, because a 27-point eruption at Eastern Washington tells you he can win a segment by himself.

Montana State vs. Northern Colorado pick, best bet

Northern Colorado has a good cover case, and it starts with the tempo negotiation actually landing in its favor. If the Bears force early-clock threes and pull Montana State into quick exchanges, 151.5 can feel light by halftime. They also have the most dangerous kind of home edge, which is confidence in the shot profile. When a team shoots 49.1% overall and 36.7% from three, a few clean looks can become a run without any turnovers required. The other piece is rebounding pressure, because Northern Colorado owns a +4.4 rebounding margin, and second chances are the fastest way to inflate possessions without playing reckless. Montana State’s rebuttal is the most reliable trait in college hoops: it simply doesn’t beat itself. That 10.7 turnovers per game is a real ceiling on Northern Colorado’s easiest points, and it’s why Montana State stays inside numbers like this. Montana State also brings enough perimeter shot-making to answer a surge without needing to gamble. If Northern Colorado doesn’t separate from three, it becomes a late-game shot trade, and that’s where the steadier ball security tends to cash.

I’m also watching the whistle layer, because this total lives or dies on free throws as much as threes. Brown just showed how a guard can turn a close game into points by living at the line, and McMahon’s game has that same pressure-release value. On the other side, Denker’s ability to get downhill and draw contact keeps Northern Colorado from going cold for long stretches. That said, the side bet is still about who controls the “empty possession” count. Montana State should keep the game in its comfort by valuing the ball, taking away kick-out threes with disciplined closeouts, and making Northern Colorado finish over bodies. Northern Colorado should lean into spread spacing and quick-hitting ball screens for Denker, because the quickest path to separation is forcing rotations before Montana State can set its shell.

I’m taking Montana State +2.5 because the cleaner possession profile travels, even when the road record looks ugly. Predicted score: Montana State 78, Northern Colorado 76.

Best bet: Montana State +2.5 (-110) at Northern Colorado
