Montana comes in at 9–9 overall and 3–2 in the Big Sky, and it needs a clean response tonight. Northern Arizona is still hunting its first league win at 0–6, and desperation can sharpen edges fast. This is the kind of conference game where the standings do the talking, not the hype. Flagstaff adds its own tax, because the air is thin and legs can go loud late. If Montana wants to stay in the top half of this race, it can’t let a road night drift. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks and the Montana Grizzlies.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Northern Arizona vs. Montana prediction, preview
The matchup is a pace argument first, because Montana wants to run and NAU wants to breathe. Montana plays at 74.2 possessions per game, while NAU sits at 68.5, so somebody’s comfort gets challenged. Montana’s offense has real polish, shooting 48.8% from the field and 34.4% from three, and it’s elite at the line at 77.6%. NAU’s defense has been the leak, allowing opponents to hit 36.4% from three, and that’s a dangerous profile against a team that can space. The other side matters, too, because Montana holds opponents to 31.1% from deep, and that can erase NAU’s easiest scoring path. The total sitting at 146.5 is basically asking whether Montana drags tempo uphill or NAU keeps the game in a half-court box.
Montana can still dictate, even with the altitude and travel. Money Williams (G) drives everything at 19.4 points with 5.4 assists on 50.2% shooting, and his recent scoring run screams confidence. Over his last five, he’s gone 17, 18, 35, 31, and 11, and the 35 came with 12-of-14 at the stripe. Te’Jon Sawyer (F) gives them efficient muscle at 59.4% shooting, and he keeps possessions from dying inside. Brooklyn Hicks (G) and Tyler Thompson (G) provide steady secondary scoring, and that balance matters when the first action gets blown up. NAU’s answers are real, but they’re volatile. Zack Davidson (F) scores 14.0 per game on 61.7% shooting, yet he’s at 46.3% at the line, which can turn late offense into empty trips. Isaiah Shaw (G) and Arne Osojnik (G) can get hot, and their recent point totals show they’ll fire without fear.
Montana vs. Northern Arizona pick, best bet
The Northern Arizona cover case is clear, and it starts with disruption. NAU creates extra possessions with steals, and Montana has lived with some sloppiness at 14.0 turnovers per game. If NAU wins the turnover count and hits first-half threes, it can make -3.5 feel heavy in a hurry. Home legs plus altitude can also mute Montana’s transition pressure and turn this into a slower, tighter game. The refutation is the shape of the efficiency gaps. NAU’s defense has allowed clean perimeter looks all season, and Montana has better shooting and better late-game free throws. Montana already handled this matchup 78–64 on January 1, and the profile still points the same direction.
This number is pricing Montana as the better team, but respecting the road environment and the pace tug-of-war. I’m still laying the 3.5, because Montana owns the two biggest late-game separators here. It defends the arc at a higher level, and it closes possessions at the line while NAU leaks points there. The script should be Montana pushing early offense after makes, but also being willing to win with spacing in the half court. NAU should try to slow the clock, pressure the handle, and live with contested threes over paint touches.
I’m taking Montana -3.5. Predicted score: Montana 77, Northern Arizona 72.
Best bet: Montana -3.5 (-110) at Northern Arizona
