Nicholls State Colonels vs. Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks prediction, pick for NCAAM on Monday 1/19/26

Stephen F. Austin walks into Thibodaux sitting on top of the Southland at 8–1, with Nicholls right behind at 7–2. That’s not a random midweek game, that’s a race-day possession count. The venue matters, too, because SFA hasn’t won in this building since 2016 and has dropped two straight here. Nicholls just took a home loss, so the urgency is sharp, not theoretical. This is the kind of night where every loose rebound feels like a point swing. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Nicholls State Colonels and the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Nicholls State vs. Stephen F. Austin prediction, preview

The matchup starts with tempo and possession leverage, because both teams want to play fast. Nicholls lives around 71 possessions per game, and SFA sits near 69, so the game should breathe with pace. SFA’s defense is the separator on paper, holding opponents to roughly a 45.4% effective field goal rate, and that’s the cleanest way to travel. Nicholls can score, but its defense has given up a 56.0% effective field goal rate, which invites high-quality looks all night. The second lever is the glass, where SFA has lived around a 37.0% offensive rebounding rate, and Nicholls has been vulnerable to second shots. The third lever is chaos, because Nicholls forces turnovers at an extreme clip, and that’s how it changes games without making shots.

Keon Thompson (F) is the steady engine at 16.7 points per game on 54.6% shooting, and he’s the kind of scorer who doesn’t need a heater. Lateef Patrick (G) brings the burst, and that 29-point outing last game shows the ceiling when the whistle and tempo cooperate. Nazir Thompson (G) is the spacing blade at 43.1% from three, and that gravity opens the lane for cuts and crashes. Jerald Colonel (F) is the defensive anchor with 2.8 blocks per game and 7.6 rebounds, and that rim presence matters versus a team that wants to attack off live-ball turnovers. For Nicholls, Jaylen Searles (G) is the primary perimeter threat at 14.3 per game with 40.8% from three, and he’s the guy who can flip a spread in two possessions. Jalik Dunkley (F) gives them paint efficiency at 57.9% shooting with 6.9 rebounds, and he’s the finisher when the guards draw help. Sincere Malone (G) and Trae English (G) are the chaos merchants, stacking steals and pressure that can turn clean offense into scrambled late-clock shots.

Stephen F. Austin vs. Nicholls State pick, best bet

The SFA cover case is straightforward, and it deserves respect. SFA is scoring 82.1 per game in conference play while allowing only 65.2, and that profile usually wins the night. It also protects the ball at a conference-best level, living around 9.5 turnovers per game, which blunts Nicholls’ biggest weapon. If SFA keeps the game in the halfcourt and owns the defensive glass, Nicholls is forced to score over a set defense. The refutation is that Nicholls can make this a possession-tax game at home, because its pressure speeds up decision-making and forces rushed threes. Add the historical tripwire in Thibodaux, and SFA’s margin feels thinner than the raw power rating.

This is why I prefer the points instead of laying them. The number is sitting at SFA -4.5 with a 144.5 total, and the bet-split gravity is pulling hard toward the favorite. That kind of public concentration tends to inflate the tax on the better brand, especially in a rivalry-at-the-top league game. The whistle also matters here, because both teams live in free-throw games, and late bonus points favor the underdog cover path.

I’m taking Nicholls +4.5, and I expect a tight, high-possession finish. Predicted score: SFA 76, Nicholls 74.

Best bet: Nicholls State +4.5 (-110) vs. SFA
