Albany Great Danes vs. Vermont Catamounts prediction, pick for NCAAM on Monday 1/19/26

This is a high-noon(ish!) bell that actually matters in America East. Vermont is 11–7, already 3–0 in league, and it plays like it knows January math. UAlbany is 6–12, but it’s 2–1 in conference and 4–1 at home. The building gets teeth today, because ESPNU turns this into a spotlight game. I treat that energy as real, not decorative, in a one-possession spread. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Albany Great Danes and the Vermont Catamounts.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Albany vs. Vermont prediction, preview

Vermont still owns the cleaner possession profile, and that’s where my lean starts. The Cats sit at 12.9% turnovers, and they rarely hand opponents free runs. UAlbany lives at 19.2% turnovers, which is a constant leak in a slow game. Vermont also finishes defensive trips at an elite level, allowing only a 20.5% offensive rebound rate. UAlbany has been porous on its own glass, allowing a 34.0% offensive rebound rate. That gap can create extra shots without any shooting heater. Vermont’s shot-making baseline is steadier too, with a 53.9 eFG% against UAlbany’s 49.8. The tempo lives in the mid-sixties for both teams, so every empty trip weighs more.

The player ecosystems fit that same shape. Gus Yalden (F) gives Vermont a reliable interior scorer at 17.3 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. He finishes at 56.4% from the field, which stabilizes long possessions. TJ Long (G) supplies the perimeter engine at 13.7 points, and he keeps Vermont’s offense from stalling. TJ Hurley (G) adds 12.7 points and a 94.0% free-throw mark, which matters in late-game margin fights. Albany’s answer is Amir Lindsey (G), the creator who can bend a slow game with a quick three. Lindsey sits at 17.4 points per game and hits 35.9% from deep. Jonathan Beagle (C) brings the interior volume at 12.0 points and 9.7 rebounds. Zacharie Matulu (G) is the spacer at 41.8% from three, which keeps Vermont honest. Albany just beat Binghamton with Lindsey erupting after halftime, and that confidence carries into tip.

Vermont vs. Albany pick, best bet

Albany’s cover case is not hard to sketch, because the matchup offers variance levers. UAlbany takes threes at a 44.6% rate, and a make-streak can erase a possession deficit fast. Vermont has also allowed opponents to shoot 36.2% from three, so the wrong ten-minute stretch can swing this. The rebuttal is that Vermont’s rebounding is the best antidote to volatility. Vermont’s defensive rebounding rate sits at 79.5%, so Albany’s misses usually end as one-and-done. The endgame math also tilts Vermont, because Albany shoots 63.7% at the line. Albany is also -5.0 in free throws made per game, with 9.3 made and 14.3 allowed. In a tight spread, that’s a loud way to lose.

The board is simple: Vermont -4.5 at -115, with 140.5 as the total and Vermont -225 on the moneyline. I’m laying the -4.5, because Vermont’s edges are repeatable and travel well. This feels like a possession economy game, not a track meet. Vermont should win the turnover battle and the rebound battle, which usually decides mid-major road favorites. Albany’s best path is a three-point wave plus home-court lift, and that path is narrow.

I’ll play Vermont -4.5, and I’d play it to -5.5. I’m projecting Vermont 72, UAlbany 66.

Best bet: Vermont -4.5 (-115) at UAlbany
