The celebration in Denver has come to a screeching halt following a stunning injury update.

Broncos head coach Sean Payton announced that quarterback Bo Nix will undergo season-ending surgery on a broken ankle he sustained during Saturday night’s AFC Divisional Round victory over the Buffalo Bills.

The second-year quarterback had just thrown for 279 yards and three touchdowns to lift the Broncos to their first AFC championship game since they won the Super Bowl in 2016.

He suffered the injury on the second-to-last play of overtime, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

With Nix out for the season, Denver will hand the ball to sixth-year signal-caller Jarrett Stidham, who hasn’t thrown a pass in the last two seasons.

The top-seeded Broncos will host either the Patriots or Texans in the AFC championship game on Jan. 25 at 3 p.m. ET.
