Vanderbilt Commodores vs. Florida Gators prediction, pick for NCAAM on Saturday 1/17/26

Florida walks into this one at 12–5 with the league already tightening around every possession. Vanderbilt is 16–1, and the first loss already put a target on its response. The standings are simple and sharp, with both teams sitting 3–1 in SEC play. It’s a clash of math, not myth, because both teams can score in bunches. I expect the game to be decided by shot quality versus second-chance volume, not vibes. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Vanderbilt Commodores and the Florida Gators.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Vandy vs. Florida prediction, preview

The cleanest profile edge belongs to Vanderbilt’s offense, because it scores at 1.206 points per possession. That efficiency is built on a 57.8% eFG and an 11.8% turnover rate. Florida’s offense is strong but noisier at 1.148, with a 52.0% eFG and a 14.0% turnover rate. The defensive side is almost a mirror, with both sitting around 0.95–0.96 defensive efficiency. So the game swings on how points are created. Vanderbilt’s spacing leans three-heavy, with a 48.1% three-point rate and 36.3% conversion. Florida’s attack is more interior and far less reliable from deep, sitting near 28.0% from three. The counterweight is brutal, because Florida’s offensive rebounding rate is 43.7%. That’s a second-chance engine big enough to erase a shooting gap if the glass turns.

The player layer fits the same geometry. Thomas Haugh (F) has been Florida’s temperature-raiser at 17.4 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. Alex Condon (F) gives them a second interior creator at 14.2 points and 8.3 rebounds. Rueben Chinyelu (C) is the rebounding spine at 11.4 points and 10.7 boards, and that matters against a team that wants to fly. Boogie Fland (G) sits around 11.8 points with 3.5 assists, and his decision-making is the swing skill. Vanderbilt’s guard play is the headline, because Duke Miles (G) brings 17.5 points with 4.4 assists and 2.9 steals. Tyler Tanner (G) adds 17.2 points and 5.2 assists, which keeps the offense from sticking. Tyler Nickel (F) is the spacing blade at 14.7 points and 47.2% from three. The rotation note worth honoring is Frankie Collins (G) being out, because 7.8 points and 4.7 assists is real connective tissue.

Florida vs. Vandy pick, best bet

Florida’s cover case is easy to see, and it starts with turning this into a rebounding tax. Vanderbilt already showed a soft underbelly at Texas, losing the glass 42–24. If Florida turns misses into putbacks, the three-point gap stops mattering. The other Florida lever is pressure, because it just forced 18 turnovers against Tennessee while winning the boards 41–30. That’s the exact recipe that makes a road game feel smaller. The refutation is that Vanderbilt’s offense is built to survive chaos, because it simply doesn’t give the ball away often. If Florida sends extra bodies to the glass, the court opens behind them. That’s where Miles and Tanner can turn stops into quick threes and free throws.

Now the bet. With Florida laying 1.5 on the road and a 166.5 total on the board, the market is admitting this won’t be a halfcourt crawl. The spread still feels playable because the possession edges point the same direction, with Vanderbilt owning the cleaner eFG and the lower turnover rate. The ATS sheet also leans that way, with Florida sitting 6–11 ATS versus Vanderbilt at 10–7. Totals-wise, both profiles have lived near coin-flip outcomes, which makes the side a cleaner expression than the over. I’m laying it with Vanderbilt -3.5, and I’m trusting the shot-making and ball security to travel even when the glass gets violent.

I expect Vanderbilt to keep the floor spread with Nickel glued to shooting pockets, because Florida’s closeouts must respect the arc. Vanderbilt should lean into guard-led creation early, because the offense runs clean when the ball stays off the floor too long. Florida should answer by living through Condon and Chinyelu touches and crashing relentlessly, because 43.7% offensive rebounding changes every miss into a potential score.

The whistle matters here, because Vanderbilt’s free-throw pressure is real and Florida’s physicality can turn defense into bonus points. I’ve got Vanderbilt 85–79.

Best bet: Vanderbilt (+100) vs. Florida
