SMU Mustangs vs. Virginia Cavaliers prediction, pick for NCAAM on Saturday 1/17/26

Virginia walks into Dallas ranked 16, and this is the kind of ACC road spot that defines a month. SMU gets the noon stage at home, and it’s hunting another résumé win with the league watching. The line is tight enough to say “coin flip,” but the styles are loud. SMU wants the game to breathe and run. Virginia wants it to feel measured, even when the score climbs. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the SMU Mustangs and the Virginia Cavaliers.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

SMU vs. Virginia prediction, preview

The math starts with tempo and shot diet, because these teams live in different cadences. SMU is at 76.0 possessions per game, while Virginia sits at 70.6. SMU is a shot-making outfit, sitting at 50.5% from the field and 39.1% from three with a 55.5% eFG. Virginia is cleaner than it gets defensively, allowing 41.8% from the field and a 48.2% eFG, and it doesn’t give away easy threes either. The friction point is obvious and repeatable. SMU wants spacing threes and quick triggers. Virginia wants every catch met with a body and every miss finished with a rebound.

The player layer tilts toward creators and closers, not just systems. Boopie Miller (G) is the headliner, scoring 20.8 per game while hitting 40.5% from three and 89.3% at the line. Jaron Pierre Jr. (G) adds 17.2 and can turn a quiet two minutes into eight points. B.J. Edwards (G) brings 13.4 with steady pace control, and Corey Washington (F) is another 40% shooter from deep. Samet Yiğitoğlu (C) gives SMU a real interior base at 11.1 points and 8.3 rebounds. Thijs De Ridder (F) is Virginia’s scoring anchor at 16.0 per game on efficient shooting, and he just hung 22 in a 70–55 win over Stanford. Chance Mallory (G) supplies the table-setting with 4.1 assists and two steals per game, while Ugonna Onyenso (C) brings 2.6 blocks that can erase layups and change drivers’ angles.

Virginia vs. SMU pick, best bet

Virginia’s counter is real, because the defensive profile can take air out of a hot gym fast. If Virginia keeps SMU out of transition threes and forces late-clock twos, the possession-by-possession squeeze shows up. The pushback is that SMU has multiple shot-makers, and its spacing is built to punish help. SMU also attacks the glass, and that matters when Virginia’s defense forces misses but has to finish the play. If SMU turns extra chances into kick-out threes, Virginia can’t win on control alone.

I’m taking SMU +1.5. The home side has the better pure shot-making profile, and the pace edge gives it more chances to let that skill matter. Virginia’s defense can absolutely win the night, but Virginia’s 66.5% team free-throw mark adds stress in a one-possession finish. I expect SMU’s guards to win enough late possessions, especially if Miller gets to his pull-up game.

Give me SMU 79, Virginia 76.

Best bet: SMU +1.5 (-110) vs. Virginia
