Cincinnati Bearcats vs. Iowa State Cyclones prediction, pick for NCAAM on Saturday 1/17/26

Iowa State rolls into Cincinnati at 16–1 with the Big 12 already feeling like a daily knife fight. Cincinnati sits 9–8, but the home floor has carried real weight at 9–2. This is the exact kind of Saturday test that decides whether a contender stays crisp on the road. The market has Iowa State laying 5.5 with a 141.5 total, and that number tells a story. It’s respect for Cincinnati’s defense, plus a nod to Iowa State’s health questions. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Vanderbilt Commodores and the Florida Gators.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Cincinnati vs. Iowa State prediction, preview

The backbone is simple: Iowa State can score cleanly against almost any shape because its creators don’t need perfect conditions. Curtis Jones (G) is a steady heater at 16.9 points per game, and he’s the kind of shot-maker who survives good contests. Tamin Lipsey (G) keeps the whole thing organized with 4.6 assists, and that’s why the offense stays efficient at 1.208 points per possession. Joshua Jefferson (F) matters as the connective tissue, because his 7.5 rebounds keep possessions alive and let Iowa State play through misses. That’s how you get a 58.2% effective field goal rate with the three-ball landing at 40.3%. Cincinnati can absolutely guard, sitting around 0.904 defensive efficiency with opponent eFG down near 47.5%, so the resistance is real. The problem is Cincinnati’s offense hasn’t brought the same level, sitting near 1.011 efficiency with a 49.6% eFG. Jizzle James (G) leads them at 12.9 points, but the spacing gets cramped when the threes don’t fall. Dillon Mitchell (F) can win effort possessions with 6.5 rebounds, yet that doesn’t fix a 30.7% three-point clip and 64.2% free-throw shooting. When you live on thin shooting, you don’t get many easy comebacks.

This game also has a turnover-and-rebounding personality, and the names explain why it swings. Lipsey is the stabilizer, and Iowa State’s ball security shows up in that 12.8% turnover rate. On the other end, Iowa State still creates mess by forcing turnovers on 20.9% of possessions, which is how Jones gets to play in early-clock space. Cincinnati does generate takeaways too, forcing turnovers on 18.3%, and that’s where James can turn one live-ball steal into a quick run. The swing is extra chances, and this is where Jefferson and Mitchell actually matter. Iowa State’s offensive rebounding rate is 35.0%, while Cincinnati sits closer to 28.7%. That gap turns a “great defensive possession” into a putback anyway. If Iowa State is even average on the road glass, Cincinnati has to score in the halfcourt more often than it wants.

Iowa State vs. Cincinnati pick, best bet

The recent tape points in opposite directions, which is why the number has settled where it has. Iowa State just took its first loss, 80–61 at Kansas, and the first half was a mess with 24% shooting and ten first-half turnovers. Cincinnati just beat Colorado 83–71 by turning the game into a track of loose balls, winning points off turnovers 30–18 and fast-break points 24–two. Baba Miller (F) popping for 25 and 11 is the kind of confidence jolt that can juice a home underdog. But Cincinnati’s offense still needs transition sparks to feel comfortable. Iowa State’s defense sits at 0.896 efficiency for a reason, and it typically drags opponents back into long possessions.

So yes, my conclusion shifts with the updated board, but it doesn’t flip. Iowa State -5.5 is still the side I want, because the shot-making and ball security advantages are hard to cover for forty minutes. The softer number also prices in the health cloud, especially with Xavier Mitchell’s status hanging. Cincinnati has also been solid to bettors at 11–6 ATS, so this is not a fade-for-fun spot. But Iowa State has been profitable too at 10–7 ATS, and the matchup asks Cincinnati to score through a wall while Iowa State gets points in more than one way.

I’m laying the 5.5, and I’m calling it Iowa State 74, Cincinnati 67.

Best bet: Iowa State -5.5 (-110) at Cincinnati
