Boise State Broncos vs. Colorado State Rams prediction, pick for NCAAM on Friday 1/16/26

Colorado State is 11–6, and it still expects to matter in the Mountain West race. Boise State is 9–8, and the margin for error is already gone at 1–5 in league play. This is a pressure game, not a postcard game, because both teams need a clean February runway. The Pac-12 move hovering in the background only sharpens the urgency. Tonight reads like a checkpoint for which identity holds under heat. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Boise State Broncos and the Colorado State Rams.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Boise State vs. Colorado State prediction, preview

The basketball math starts with a pace clash that should decide the shape of every possession. Colorado State is crawling at 65.5 possessions per game, while Boise State lives at 72.5. Colorado State wants it deliberate, because it lives on shot quality and spacing. Its offense is 1.182 points per possession, a top-ten efficiency profile. Boise State plays faster, but it wins with defense and possession control, not fireworks. Boise’s defense is 1.020 points per possession allowed, a top-50 guardrail. Colorado State owns the rare profile of elite efficiency without chaos, because its eFG sits at the top nationally. The Rams are sitting on a 59.2% eFG, while Boise’s offense is down at 48.6%. Boise’s defense is built to sand that down, because it keeps teams from living at the rim and then ends possessions on the glass. Boise clears 76.7% of defensive rebounds, and Colorado State’s defensive rebounding is only 70.6%. The tug-of-war is simple: Colorado State tries to turn every trip into a clean look, while Boise tries to turn every trip into work. That “work” shows up in Boise forcing turnovers on 19.2% of possessions, while Colorado State’s own turnover rate is 16.6%.

The scoring ecosystem for Colorado State still has enough juice to travel, even with Kyle Jorgensen (F) listed out. Colorado State’s shot diet is built to scale, with a 48.0% three-point attempt rate and a 40.2% three-point percentage. Carey Booth (F) gives them a real two-way hinge, and the shooting around him stays lethal. Booth is at 12.1 points and 7.1 rebounds per game, and he’s shooting 47.6% from three. Josh Pascarelli (G) and Brandon Rechsteiner (G) both live above 40% from three, and that’s the kind of gravity that bends defenses late. Pascarelli is hitting 42.9% from three, and Rechsteiner is at 41.7%. Colorado State’s season-long three-point clip sits above 40%, and it’s still near 39% away from home. That road split matters here, because Boise’s best defensive outcomes come when it turns games into empty trips. Boise’s offense runs through Drew Fiedler (F) and Javan Buchanan (G), but the bigger tell is Dylan Andrews (G) sitting under 31% from the field. Andrews is at 30.5% from the floor and 26.3% from three, which can stall whole stretches. That shooting profile is exactly why Boise keeps pulling games into a free-throw and rebounding economy. Boise’s FTA/FGA is 0.437, and Colorado State is allowing 0.389, so contact points are a real pathway.

Colorado State vs. Boise State pick, best bet

Boise’s case is real, because the most repeatable separators all wear blue tonight. Boise also does the discipline piece, allowing only a 0.296 opponent FTA/FGA and living among the nation’s best at avoiding cheap whistles. Boise forces turnovers at a top-tier rate and clears the defensive glass like a veteran team. Colorado State’s defense is still vulnerable, sitting at 1.115 points per possession allowed, which keeps Boise’s scoring routes alive. It also gets to the line, and that matters in a possession game. Boise’s free throws aren’t empty calories either, with a 75.9% team clip. The pushback is that Boise still has to score enough to create separation, and the shot-making has been unreliable all season. That unreliability shows up in the 32.1% three-point percentage and the 42.0% overall field-goal mark. Colorado State doesn’t need a parade to the stripe to keep pace, because it can cash threes and midrange pull-ups in rhythm. Colorado State’s last-ten profile still supports that, with a 118.8 adjusted offense, while Boise’s is 108.8. If Colorado State keeps its turnovers ordinary, Boise’s cleanest blowout path narrows fast. Because Boise’s best “two-score” script needs extra possessions from pressure plus free throws plus a big glass edge.

I’m taking Colorado State +5.5. The Rams have the single most bankable skill in the building, because the shot-making is elite by any lens. Boise’s defense is the best unit on the floor, but the spread asks Boise to create a cushion with an offense that has struggled to shoot. Boise’s last-ten defense has been sharp at 100.8 adjusted, yet the offense still grades only 165th in that same window. Colorado State’s recent form has been uneven, yet its core skill is still the most valuable road skill in college hoops: make shots without needing whistles. Colorado State is still hitting 39.1% from three away from home, so the scoring floor travels. Boise’s last ten defensive rating looks strong, but Colorado State’s offense stays efficient in the same window. Colorado State’s last-ten defense is still the soft spot at 110.6 adjusted, which keeps a late Boise push on the table. This number feels like it prices Boise’s control without pricing Boise’s scoring limitations. Colorado State doesn’t need to win the possession war, it just needs to avoid losing it badly.

Give me Boise 70, Colorado State 68, and Colorado State +5.5.

Best bet: Colorado State +5.5 (-110) at Boise State
