Gonzaga walks into Pullman ranked ninth, 17–1, and still playing like a team that wants to end arguments early. Washington State is 8–10 and 3–2, living in the middle of the WCC grind and trying to protect its home floor from a freight train. The line is huge because Gonzaga’s ceiling shows up in margins, not just wins. The total is huge because both teams can score, and Gonzaga can score in a hurry. The question is whether the Cougars can keep this game human for forty minutes. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Gonzaga Bulldogs and the Washington State Cougars.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Gonzaga vs. Washington State prediction, preview
The scoreboard usually follows paint points and possession quality, and Gonzaga owns both categories. They’re averaging 91.4 points with a +23.6 margin while shooting 52.6% from the field and 36.9% from three. They also lead the nation in points in the paint at 48.4 per game, which is a brutal way to create scoring without relying on streak threes. Even when the jumper cools, Gonzaga can still win possessions with size and finishing, and the rebounding edge shows it, at +10.8 boards per game. Washington State’s defense has been leaky at 75.2 allowed per game, and the offensive identity leans on a heavy three-point diet. That’s a rough mix against a Gonzaga defense holding opponents to 39.1% shooting and 28.9% from three, because the Cougars’ “keep it close” path depends on making the hardest shots.
The people decide whether the spread is sweat or ceremony. Braden Huff (G) and Graham Ike (F) both sit at 17.8 per game, so Gonzaga can hurt you in multiple ways without changing its shape. Ike’s form has been monster enough to earn WCC Player of the Week, and he’s already stacked 10 double-doubles. Braeden Smith (G) is the control valve, carrying an 85-to-23 assist-to-turnover line, and that steadiness is how big favorites keep stacking clean trips. Steele Venters (G) hovering at 40.0% from three gives Gonzaga a spacing knife when teams overhelp on Ike. For Washington State, Ace Glass (G) is the lifeline at 15.9 points, and his 40-point eruption against Arizona State shows the kind of shot-making that can bend a game for a stretch. ND Okafor (C) is the rim spine at 60.2% shooting with 30 blocks, and the notes say he has a block in 12 of the last 13 games. Rihards Vavers (G) hitting 37.8% from three is the other lever, because WSU needs real perimeter punch to offset Gonzaga’s paint economy. If Okafor can force kick-outs and WSU can actually cash those threes, the Cougars can hang around.
Washington State vs. Gonzaga pick, best bet
The danger sign for WSU is turnover tax, because that’s how a close game turns into a runaway. Washington State is carrying a -3.1 turnover margin with a 0.9 assist-to-turnover ratio, and that is the exact profile Gonzaga punishes. Gonzaga forces 14.7 opponent turnovers per game and plays fast enough that live-ball mistakes become instant points. The pushback is that WSU has a real keep it close path on the glass and through shooting. The Cougars are 7–2 when they shoot over 45%, and they just posted a 54–28 rebounding smash in one of their recent wins. That’s the recipe: avoid bad shots, avoid giveaways, and make Gonzaga play longer possessions.
Expect Gonzaga to keep pounding the paint through Ike while Smith keeps the offense on time and mistake-free. Washington State has to manufacture threes through Glass and Vavers, because twos won’t keep pace against 48.4 paint points. If the Cougars don’t protect the ball, Gonzaga’s transition scoring will turn the last ten minutes into a math problem.
I’m laying Gonzaga -18.5. The offensive base is too stable, because the paint scoring travels and the ball security is elite. Washington State needs multiple thin outcomes at once, including a hot three-point night against a defense that’s been suffocating from deep. Gonzaga also wins the glass by 10.8 boards per game, so even WSU’s rebounding pride is up against a bigger machine.
Predicted score: Gonzaga 92, Washington State 71.
Best bet: Gonzaga -18.5 (-110) vs. Washington State
