Florida Atlantic Owls vs. Wichita State Shockers prediction, pick for NCAAM on Thursday 1/15/26

Updated:

Wichita State walks into Boca at 10–7 and 2–2 in the AAC, and every league game has felt like a one-possession referendum. Florida Atlantic is 11–6 and 3–1, with the home floor acting like a lever in a race that’s still wide open. The spread is short because neither side has been living on flukes. The total is loud because both teams can score in chunks and both defenses create events. This is a game where one hot stretch turns into a scoreboard tide. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Florida Atlantic Owls and the Wichita State Shockers.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

FAU vs. Wichita State prediction, preview

The most honest place to begin is shot volume versus defensive chaos. Wichita State is first in the AAC in made threes at 9.9 and attempts at 28.3, and it shoots 36.1% from deep while hitting 74.4% at the line. That profile can beat good defenses because it never needs perfect twos to keep pace. FAU’s counter is hands and rim protection, with 6.9 steals and 4.8 blocks per game, and that’s how it creates separation without shooting 50%. If Wichita keeps its ball security intact and gets clean catch-and-shoot looks, it can turn this into a possession math problem FAU hates. If FAU turns a few Wichita drives into live-ball points, the margin can jump fast.

The creators are why I’m comfortable living in this range. Kenyon Giles (G) is the headliner, coming off 33 against North Texas, and the recent run includes 27 at Rice and 23 versus Charlotte, with 20-plus in four of the last six. He’s also been stacking threes all season, entering the week seventh nationally with 56 makes, so the volume isn’t a mirage. Michael Gray Jr. (G) matters as the second scorer who can punish help, and Karon Boyd (F) plus Will Berg (F/C) have to make the glass and paint physical so the guards can keep firing. For FAU, Devin Vanterpool (G) runs the show at 16.3 points with 5.1 assists, Kenan Carlyle (G) adds 14.0, and Devin Williams (F/C) is the rim anchor at 1.8 blocks per game. That’s a clean hierarchy, and it explains why FAU can survive when the first option is bottled.

Wichita State vs. FAU pick, best bet

There is a clean way this breaks against Wichita, and it’s not complicated. If FAU turns this into an “events” game, blocks and steals become instant points, and that’s how a short spread turns into a seven-point finish. Wichita’s own league games have been knife fights, with three decided in the final minute, so late-game volatility is part of the package. The pushback is Wichita’s current form and shot creation. They just beat UAB 75–70 and then handled North Texas 78–67, which is a real level-up in offensive clarity. If Giles keeps generating gravity, the threes will be there even against pressure.

Expect Wichita to keep hunting early threes and quick drag screens, because that’s how it avoids FAU’s set defense and blocks. FAU will try to trap the margins by turning every drive into a contested finish, then running off steals into layups. If Wichita limits live-ball mistakes and wins even a modest share of the rebounding, the plus points should cash in a two-possession game.

So I’m taking Wichita State +3.5. The market has been moving around this number, which tells you the game is priced as a near coin flip, and the points matter. Wichita is 10–6 ATS and FAU is 10–5 ATS, so this isn’t a “bad number team” versus “good number team” spot. I’m betting the repeatable edge: elite three-point volume and a scorer who can keep contact even when the game speeds up.

Predicted score: Florida Atlantic 81, Wichita State 79.

Best bet: Wichita Stata +3.5 (-110) at FAU
