California Golden Bears vs. Duke Blue Devils prediction, pick for NCAAM on Wednesday 1/14/26

Duke arrives at 15–1 and unbeaten in league play, carrying the nightly pressure of a contender. California comes home after a bruising road swing, with the crowd now chasing a signature late-night moment. This spot is also about rhythm, because a cross-country tip can bend legs and timing. Duke’s standard is clinical control, not just wins. Cal’s angle is belief, because the margin math changes when jumpers fall early. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the California Golden Bears and the Duke Blue Devils.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Cal vs. Duke prediction, preview

Duke owns a 58.1% eFG and lives on twos at 62.4%, so the attack is constant paint pressure. That’s why Cameron Boozer (F) matters beyond raw points, because he turns single coverage into fouls or help. Patrick Ngongba II (C) is the quiet second wave, because 63.9% finishing punishes late rotations. Isaiah Evans (G) is the floor-tilt, because defenders can’t tag the roll and still find his shooting. Cal’s offense can score, but it doesn’t chase extra possessions, sitting at 24.8% offensive rebounding. That meets Duke’s 34.2% offensive rebounding, and that gap is how favorites build margin without shooting miracles. Cal’s best defensive trait is ball-denial without chaos. It protects the ball at 12.6% turnovers per play, and opponents barely generate steals. Duke still brings pressure, forcing turnovers on 17.3% of plays and stealing 10.5% outright. If Cal survives that first wave, it can keep the game from turning into a track meet.

The supporting player layer explains the scoring shape and the cover routes. Boozer is the driver at 22.9 points and 9.5 boards, and his recent line has included 29, 27, and 24. Evans adds 14.4 per game, and his recent run keeps popping with big three-point nights. Caleb Foster (G) and Cayden Boozer (G) matter in this matchup because Cal wants a clean, low-mistake game. Cal’s offense runs through Dai Dai Ames (G) at 17.8, and he can play point guard with seven-assist structure. Justin Pippen (G) has shown real pop with back-to-back twenty-one point games, which is how an underdog keeps contact. Chris Bell (G/F) gives Cal a second shot-making channel at 13.8 per game, even if the nights swing. Lee Dort (F) becomes the possession hinge, because Cal’s rebounding is thin and his 7.5 boards are needed. Cal also shoots 78.5% at the line and 36.5% from three, which keeps the back door alive late.

Duke vs. Cal pick, best bet

The Duke blowout case is simple, and it’s rooted in separation possessions. Cal’s defense has been loose lately, with the last three games allowing 1.145 points per possession. Duke’s offense stays high even when it downshifts, sitting at 1.185 points per possession over its last three. If Duke wins the glass and turns a few Cal passes into runouts, this number is live by halftime. The refutation is that Duke’s defense has not looked as sharp recently either, sitting at 1.084 allowed over the last three. Cal’s ball security and free-throw shooting can keep it from collapsing into a fourteen-minute drought. Duke’s own free-throw shooting sits at 71.8%, which opens the door for missed chances to extend margin.

Now the betting shape. The board sits at Duke -14.5 with a 149.5 total, and the pace math is fast enough to tempt points. Duke and Cal both live around the low 70s in possessions, which makes backdoor windows feel real. I’m still taking the points with Cal +14.5, because its profile is built to avoid empty trips. Duke should win, but this feels closer to twelve than fifteen on a late road stage.

Predicted score: Duke 79, Cal 68.

Best bet: Cal +14.5 (-115) vs. Duke
