SEC rivals are set to meet in the Superdome to kick off 2026. Thursday’s Sugar Bowl pits Georgia against Ole Miss for a chance at college football’s final four. Awaiting the winner is a date with Miami next week at the Fiesta Bowl. Which of these conference foes will pick up a victory this evening in New Orleans?
Georgia enters Thursday’s contest as 6.5-point favorites (-108) over Ole Miss, with the over/under set at 55.5 points on DraftKings Sportsbook. The Bulldogs are favored at -238 on the moneyline.
Georgia vs. Ole Miss prediction, preview
The Bulldogs are on a roll, reeling off nine straight wins. That includes a victory over Ole Miss on October 18th, a 43-35 shootout at Sanford Stadium. As always, Kirby Smart’s crew will set out to dominate the line of scrimmage. Georgia ranked third in the SEC with 186.6 rushing yards per game. However, that could be more difficult than usual on Thursday. Starting center Drew Bobo has been ruled out due to a foot injury suffered during the regular season finale vs. Georgia Tech.
Regardless, UGA’s two-headed backfield of Nate Frazier and Chauncey Bowens remains a force to be reckoned with. Together, the duo has combined for 1,377 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns. It helps that they’re supported through the air by Gunner Stockton. The junior’s accuracy and football IQ makes him an ideal fit for this Bulldogs offense. Through 13 games, he’s thrown for 2,691 yards and 23 touchdowns while giving up only five interceptions. In addition, Stockton leads the SEC with a 71% completion percentage.
Georgia’s preferred method of scoring is on the ground. However, the Dawgs are willing to attack through the air in certain matchups. After all, Stockton has enjoyed five different games with 200+ passing yards and multiple touchdowns. Ole Miss has surrendered the SEC’s fourth-fewest passing yards per game (192.1). However, the Rebels have allowed the conference’s third-most yards per rush attempt to opponents (4.26).
On the flip side, it’s been an eventful few weeks in Oxford. Head coach Lane Kiffin made an abrupt departure for LSU, leaving the Rebels in a precarious spot. Former defensive coordinator Pete Golding now takes control of an extremely talented roster. Much like Georgia, Ole Miss is at its best on the ground. Running back Kewan Lacy dominated this season, churning out 1,366 rushing yards and an SEC-leading 21 touchdowns. However, he was held to just 41 total yards on 15 touches when these schools last met in October.
Fortunately for the Rebels, quarterback Trinidad Chambliss is a difference-maker in his own right. One of the best stories in college football, the senior has gone from backup to superstar. Over 11 games since becoming Ole Miss’s starter, Chambliss has thrown for 3,239 yards and 18 touchdowns. As a runner, he’s picked up 485 rushing yards and eight more scores. That dual-threat ability can give any defense problems, even the dangerous Bulldogs.
Granted, as is usually the case, Georgia’s defense is formidable. UGA is giving up 292.1 yards per game to opponents, the tenth-best mark in all of college football. Concerns over the team’s pass rush, once considered a major weakness, have been put to rest. Over their previous five games, the Bulldogs have recorded 12 total sacks. If that pressure continues, combined with an elite secondary, Chambliss could be in for a long night.
Georgia vs. Ole Miss pick, best bet
This is a unique matchup on a number of levels. Ole Miss’s coaching uncertainty might give bettors some trepidation. However, it didn’t show during the school’s postseason-opening 41-10 blowout over Tulane. These programs know each other well, and October’s meeting might suggest another shootout. With that being said, these two defenses rank among the nation’s best. Expecting 30+ points from either side might be wishful thinking. Both squads will try to set the tone early with their star running backs. That makes a lower-scoring affair more likely than not tonight.
