Georgia and Ole Miss face off in the lone rematch of the College Football Playoff quarterfinals. These SEC foes faced off in the middle of the regular season, with Georgia winning 43-35 in a shootout in Athens. However, much has changed since then. Mainly, Ole Miss will be playing this game without its head coach, Lane Kiffin, who has departed for LSU. The Rebels won’t have their offensive mastermind to make adjustments during the game. Also, former defensive coordinator Pete Goulding is now shouldered with all of the head coaching responsibilities, giving him less time to focus on his defense. Meanwhile, the Georgia defense has started playing at an incredibly high level. Over the final four games of the season, they gave up an average of 7.3 points per game, despite facing three ranked teams in those four games.
My best bet for this game is for Gunner Stockton to throw for at least 230 yards. Stockton has started to emerge as a real star this season. Once regarded as a “game manager,” Stockton has proven himself to be an elite college quarterback this season. Stockton had arguably his best game of the season in the regular season, throwing for 289 yards and four touchdowns to go along with 59 rushing yards and another score on the ground. This Ole Miss defense had no answers for Stockton in October, and it’s unlikely that they have found any since then.
Stockton will also be getting back one of his top weapons, Colbie Young, who got injured in the first Ole Miss game. That extra weapon should only make the Georgia pass offense even more dangerous. Tulane’s Jake Retzlaff threw for over 300 yards in the first round against the Rebels. Gunner Stockton should be equally as dangerous against Ole Miss in the quarterfinals.
