The long grind of the college football season is just about over, with each of the bowl games stepping to center stage. In the Boca Raton Bowl, the Toledo Rockets will prepare to square off with the Louisville Cardinals to conclude their 2025 seasons.
Both these programs went 8-4 in the regular season. There are some added complications to handicapping these types of bowl games with the transfer portal in full swing and the coaching carousel as active as ever. This is seen in this matchup with Toledo’s head coach, Jason Candle, leaving to be the head coach at the University of UConn. QB coach Robert Weiner will serve as the interim head coach for this matchup.

Toledo Rockets
Toledo went 8-4 this season, both straight up and against the spread. Their four losses came against Kentucky, Western Michigan, Bowling Green, and Washington State, although they closed the season on a four-game winning streak. The game total went 6-6 to the over in the Rockets’ matchups this year.
Outside of the coaching change, Toledo is not particularly picked over from a roster standpoint. Safety Emmanuel McNeil-Warren opted out to head to the Senior Bowl, and DE Malachi Davis entered the transfer portal, while RB Chip Trayanum, WR Junior Vandeross III, Avery Smith, Andre Fuller, and Nasir Bowers are names to monitor. It is worth noting that QB Tucker Gleason suffered an injury in the previous victory over Central Michigan, which resulted in Kalieb Osborne finishing the game. The hope is that Gleason is able to suit up for his final collegiate game, but this still remains up in the air.
Overall, the Rockets have generated 31.6 points per game this season, which ranks 38th in the country. They are generating 421.8 total yards of offense with a balanced attack through both the rushing and passing game. Defensively, Toledo has limited opponents to just 12.2 points per game, which ranks fourth among the 136 D1 teams. They limited opponents to nine or fewer points in each of their last four games and in six games this season overall, never allowing more than 28 points in a game. This will be a leap in competition level, but Toledo has not been afraid of Power Five teams historically.
Louisville Cardinals
The Louisville Cardinals finished the season with an 8-4 record, but were just 4-8 against the spread this season. They struggled down the stretch of the season, losing three of their final four games at the hands of California, Clemson, and SMU. Their lone other loss came against Virginia. Louisville had an impressive ranked win over then second-ranked Miami and also defeated Kentucky, whom Toledo lost to 41-0, to close down the season. The under has hit in seven of their 12 games played.
Starting DE Wesley Bailey and DT Rene Konga each opted out with over 1,000 combined snaps to their names this season. WR Chris Bell will miss the matchup due to injury, while RBs Isaac Brown, Keyjuan Brown, and Duke Watson are each battling some injury issues. Head coach Jeff Brohm remains locked in with the program and will finish his third season with the Cardinals. Miller Moss will suit up at quarterback, looking to put a positive end to his season.
Louisville is generating 30.2 points per game this season, which ranks 45th in the country, and 388.8 total yards of offense. Defensively, they have limited teams to the 35th-fewest points at 21.1 per contest, and 300.3 total yards of offense. Their +6.8 average margin of victory ranks 36th among D1 teams. Louisville is much more battle-tested, but has some transfer portal concerns.
Toledo vs. Louisville pick, best bet
Toledo has one of the best defenses in all of college football, even if they are relatively untested, given the level of competition. Offensive issues have been their biggest reason for coming up short all season. They limited Western Kentucky to just 305 yards, did a decent job limiting Washington State, and tallied 5.7 sacks per game over their final three matchups. They have limited opponents to just 4.7 third-down conversions per game and forced 20 turnovers on the season.
Expectations were high for Miller Moss, following his success at USC, but he has not quite elevated the Louisville offense in the way it was hoped. He had seven interceptions to just 14 touchdowns this year. The pass rush of Toledo could provide some problems in this matchup for the experienced quarterback.
My lean would be Toledo covering the 6.5-point spread, but I am backing the game total to go under 45.5 points in this matchup. The Toledo defense is the far more sure unit compared to their offense, and will especially struggle to put points on the board against what is likely their toughest test this season. Louisville is not a high-powered offense either, and averaged just 23.0 points per game over its past four matchups. Neither team is a quick-strike offense, with both sides averaging over 30 minutes of possession per game.
The under has cashed in seven of Louisville’s games this season. This has been especially evident late in the year, with the under cashing in four of their last five games. Toledo is 6-6 to the under on the season, but the game total has remained below the total in three of their last five.
While Toledo’s coaching change is a noteworthy concern, sometimes a coach leaving can bring a team together. This is the final game for plenty of the roster, and expect the Rockets to be prepared to end on a high note. Expect their defense to be the storyline and for neither one of these teams to be capable of breaking this game open. The first team to crack 20 should have a clear path to getting the victory, and look for this game total to remain under the 45.5 point matchup in this game.
