No. 21 Auburn and No. 6 Purdue meet in Indianapolis with the kind of neutral-floor tension that makes December feel like March. Purdue is 10-1 and carrying Big Ten expectations into a spotlight game that demands polish. Auburn is 8-3, battle-tested, and wired to turn these stages into full-contact exams. The number says Purdue should win comfortably, but the matchup decides whether this stays a game or becomes a grindstone. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Purdue Boilermakers and the Auburn Tigers.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Purdue vs. Auburn prediction, preview
I keep coming back to Purdue’s repeatable scoring versus Auburn’s volatility. Braden Smith (guard) is the metronome, and Oscar Cluff (center) is the current proof of concept. Cluff just hung 22 points and 11 rebounds on Marquette while going 9-for-9 from the field, and that kind of interior finishing changes how every possession feels. With Smith steering and Cluff converting, I keep coming back to Purdue’s repeatable scoring versus Auburn’s volatility. Purdue’s adjusted offense sits at 125.9 with a 58.1% effective field-goal rate, and the defense backs it up at 97.8 with a 47.4% eFG allowed. Auburn brings a 122.7 adjusted offense of its own, but the defense at 104.2 invites stretches where the floor tilts. Purdue also plays with real connective tissue, averaging 20.4 assists per game, and that kind of ball movement usually punishes late rotations. Auburn’s 13.7 assists per game reads more like self-creation, which gets harder when Purdue keeps bodies in the paint.
Auburn’s best case is simple and stubborn: make it physical, get to the stripe, and let Keyshawn Hall (forward) drag the game into late-clock possessions. Hall’s 20.9 points per game gives Auburn a real lifeline when the offense bogs down. Auburn also scores 86.5 per game, so it can hang a number even in ugly stretches. The problem is the whistle math does not automatically favor the underdog here. Auburn’s free-throw rate is 36.0, but Purdue’s defensive free-throw rate allowed sits at 20.4, and that’s a massive gatekeeping number. If Auburn cannot manufacture points at the line, it has to beat Purdue with jumpers over a defense that rarely gifts clean looks.
Auburn vs. Purdue pick, best bet
This spread is the whole story on the board for me: Auburn +8.5 (-108), Purdue -8.5 (-112), with a 153.5 total shaded to the over at -112 and Auburn sitting +320 on the moneyline. That total matters for the handicap because higher totals usually soften spread brittleness. More possessions mean fewer “one cold stretch” outcomes deciding everything. Purdue also owns the extra-possession lever that turns a close game into separation. Their offensive rebounding rate is 42.3, and that is not a normal number for a contender. Auburn can stay alive with bursts, but second-chance points bury dogs quietly.
So I’m laying Purdue -8.5. Purdue should win the glass, win shot quality, and win the free-throw geometry without needing a friendly whistle. Braden Smith (guard) can steer the pace with 8.4 assists per game, Fletcher Loyer (guard) brings 17.4 points per game as a steady scoring valve, and Oscar Cluff (center) adds 11.8 points with 8.5 rebounds to keep possessions alive. Auburn will have moments, because Hall can score through contact and keep the backdoor breathing.
Purdue’s structure should hold, and the margin should widen in the final eight minutes. Purdue 82, Auburn 71.
Best bet: Purdue -8.5 (-110) vs. Auburn
