Oregon is looking for redemption in the College Football Playoff. Last season, the Ducks earned the No. 1 seed, but were rewarded by facing Ohio State in their first game. This season, the Ducks are the five-seed, meaning they get to host a first-round game against the lowest-ranked team in the field, James Madison. Oregon is a team that can beat anybody on its best day, but it is not as consistent as teams like Ohio State and Indiana. Dante Moore is one of the most talented quarterbacks in the country, but he can still make costly mistakes at times. The Ducks also have a great stable of skill position players that can give opposing defenses headaches. Dan Lanning is an elite head coach, but has been given the tag of not being able to “win the big one” after losing in the CFP last season and the Pac-12 title game in 2023. Lanning would love nothing more than to shed that tag in this CFP.
James Madison Preview
James Madison improbably made the College Football Playoff, despite being the No. 24 team in the College Football Playoff rankings. The Dukes had a dominant season in the Sun Belt, steamrolling that competition, including in the conference championship game. However, in the Dukes’ lone Power Four test, they lost to Louisville 28-14. There has been a lot of debate about how deserving James Madison is of this spot with that resume, but none of that matters now. The Dukes are in this game and will do everything in their power to pull off the upset of the century over Oregon. This team has an elite defense, which would be a high-end defense in any Power Four conference. The biggest test will be whether or not their offense can move the ball against a stacked Oregon front seven.
JMU vs. Oregon Pick
My best bet for this game is for Oregon to cover the 20.5-point spread. The talent gap in this game is quite substantial. If the Ducks play their best game, it could turn into a rout. The one time this season that James Madison faced a Power Four defense, it only managed to score 14 points. That was also against a Louisville defense that is nowhere near as dominant as Oregon’s unit, which ranks fifth in the nation in defensive EPA/play.
James Madison has a great defense, but if it gets to the second half and the Dukes’ offense can’t get anything going, the defense could start to wear down against the physical bodies on the Ducks’ offensive line. There should be an amazing crowd in Eugene for this home playoff game, and it wouldn’t be surprising if James Madison gifted Oregon some points on turnovers, as well. As long as Dante Moore doesn’t turn the ball over, Oregon should win this one comfortably.
