UPDATE: Mahomes tore his ACL.
The Kansas City Chiefs’ outlook went from bad to worse with Patrick Mahomes being forced to leave the must-win matchup against the Chargers. On the first play following the two minute warning, with the Chiefs trailing 16-13, the three-time Super Bowl MVP was tackled when rolling out right with his left knee hyperextending as a result.
Mahomes has battled left knee problems for several weeks, and was in major pain following this tackle. He remained down on the field for several minutes before being helped off and leaving the field mostly under his own power.
Gardner Minshew replaced the six-time Pro Bowl QB. He completed three of his five passes for 22 yards, and was leading the Chiefs on a drive, before throwing an interception to seal the loss.
This loss dropped the Chiefs to 6-8 on the season and officially eliminates them from playoff contention. This will mark the first time in 11 years that Kansas City will not qualify for the postseason.
All focus will now shift to the status of Patrick Mahomes and how severe the injury is for the franchise quarterback. It was a nightmare season across the board for the Chiefs, but Mahomes remains just 30 years old and is not done stacking accolades just yet. Expect the organization to be incredibly cautious with his availability, given the state of the season, and Minshew is likely in line to continue filling the team’s quarterback role moving forward.
