Can You Trust Christian McCaffrey in Fantasy Football Playoffs After Late-Week Add to Injury Report?

A surprising late-week addition to the injury report made waves on Saturday. Christian McCaffrey has been downgraded to questionable with a back injury ahead of the 49ers’ matchup with the Titans.

This is the most inopportune time for fantasy football owners with the playoffs starting this week in most season-long leagues. San Francisco is still looking to cement its postseason path as well, so this is more than just a throwaway game. It holds a 9-4 record on the year, which is only good enough for third place in the NFC West.

However, ESPN’s Adam Schefter followed up his first report with optimism that McCaffrey will be ready to play.

Christian McCaffrey Fantasy Football Outlook for Week 15 vs. Titans

Injuries are a familiar storyline surrounding Christian McCaffrey. Let’s not forget the saga last season in which the belief was he had a chance to play in Week 1, only to miss the first eight matchups and playing in just four on the year. McCaffrey held a similar concern this year, being listed as questionable for Week 1 with a calf injury. The three-time Pro Bowler was able to suit up and has not missed a game yet this year.

Across his 13 games played, McCaffrey has rushed for 849 yards, tallied 806 receiving yards and 13 total touchdowns. Looking at the fantasy production, McCaffrey is averaging 25.7 fantasy points per game based on DraftKings scoring. Both his points per game and total points lead all players across every position. He has put up as many as 42.1 fantasy points in a matchup and has been held below 17.6 fantasy points in just one game.

This is a particularly friendly matchup for McCaffrey and the 49ers. They will be facing a Titans team that ranks 29th in points allowed, 26th in yards given up and 30th in rushing touchdowns conceded. McCaffrey has been the engine of this San Francisco offense while it has battled injuries at the quarterback position all year.

It is never a great sign for an injury to pop up this late in the week. This is especially the case given how the 49ers have used McCaffrey’s injury status as a form of gamesmanship in the past. The most recent report indicating he is expected to be good to go is encouraging. But keep tabs on all injury reports leading up to kickoff as more information is made public.

But when push comes to shove, don’t let the questionable tag scare you from keeping him in your lineup. Christian McCaffrey has been the best fantasy football player all season and will be facing a vulnerable defensive opponent. Even McCaffrey at less than 100% is capable of putting up more points than most running back options.

If McCaffrey is to be ruled out or limited, Brian Robinson would be the largest beneficiary. The 49ers made a bit of a surprising move shortly before the season to trade for the then-Commanders running back. Robinson has carried the ball 72 times for 328 rushing yards and two touchdowns. He is averaging 4.1 fantasy points per game based on DraftKings scoring, which ranks 11th on the San Francisco roster. He has a pair of games with 11.3 and 11.5 fantasy points, but he has been held to 5.4 or fewer in each of the other games.

If you are in a deeper league with limited running back options, Robinson could be worth taking a flyer on. Robinson is perfectly capable of carving up this Tennessee defense if McCaffrey is in any way limited. But unless new information comes to light, the expectation should remain that McCaffrey dominates the snap count and puts forth a strong game of production.

Don’t blink at the questionable tag and back McCaffrey to continue producing as a top fantasy football weapon. Ride with who got you here and expect him to have success against this struggling Titans defense.
