Butler Bulldogs vs. Providence Friars prediction, pick for NCAAM on Saturday 12/13/25

Hinkle gets loud for this one. Providence walks in having won three straight in-state wars, playing at a pace that turns every night into a sprint, while Butler brings a cleaner body of work, a bigger scoring margin and a home crowd that has watched Thad Matta’s reboot actually bite this season. This is a Big East opener between two top-30 offenses, but only one of them consistently controls the glass and the three-point line. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Butler Bulldogs and the Providence Friars.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Butler vs. Providence prediction, preview

Providence’s identity is clear now: they score in bunches and live with the mess on the other end. The Friars average 90.0 points per game on 49.1% from the field and 36.3% from three, with a 78.4% mark at the stripe. Jason Edwards leads at 18.0 points, hitting 45.1% overall and 36.4% from deep, with 80.7% at the line. Jaylin Sellers adds 15.5 points on 50.4% from the floor and 42.1% from three, and Stefan Vaaks chips in 13.5 on 36.6% from three as the primary table-setter at 3.5 assists. They crash reasonably well at 39.4 rebounds per game and a +2.4 rebounding edge, but the real story is the other side: they give up 82.1 points, 42.5% shooting and a wild 37.8% from three, allowing 10.5 made threes per game. This is a group built to win 88–84, not 68–62.

Butler looks like Providence with a grown-up spine. The Bulldogs average 87.6 points, allow only 72.2, and own a +15.3 scoring margin. They shoot 49.6% from the field, 39.4% from three and produce 8.4 made threes a night, while holding opponents to 42.0% overall and 31.1% from deep. Their biggest structural edge is the glass: 38.7 rebounds to opponents’ 29.3 is a +9.4 rebounding gap that shows up every night in second chances and one-and-done stops. Finley Bizjack has leveled up into a true headliner at 18.0 points on 49.5% shooting and 41.9% from three, and Michael Ajayi is a Big East problem at 16.2 points and 11.6 rebounds. Jamie Kaiser adds 10.0 points on 56.4% from the floor and 45.8% from three; Butler’s top three are every bit as dangerous as Providence’s, but with more size and rebounding.

Providence vs. Butler pick, best bet

Providence has real ways to punch back, which matters with a spread sitting at Butler -5.5 and a total in the mid-160s. The Friars shoot almost 36% from deep as a team, hit nearly 79% at the line and can put four live scorers on the floor at once. They are 6-1 against the spread in their last seven games against Butler and 8-3 straight up, even if they have lost six straight at Hinkle, which captures exactly how annoying they are for this program. Kim English has leaned into that chaos, and the recent wins over Rhode Island and Brown showed how quickly they can stack runs when Vaaks and Edwards get loose beyond the arc. If this becomes a pure shot-making contest with minimal whistle, Providence absolutely has a live underdog path.

Where I land is that the numbers argue for a close Butler cover rather than a runaway. Butler’s SRS sits north of 18 with Providence around 11, which on a neutral floor suggests about a 7-point gap before even layering in a Hinkle bump and that massive rebounding advantage. The Bulldogs also defend the three far better than anyone Providence has seen since that Wisconsin blowout in San Diego, and Ajayi’s presence gives them an answer when the game tilts toward the paint. The Friars’ defense, by contrast, still looks like the same profile that allowed 104 to Wisconsin and sits 336th nationally in points allowed at 82.4 per game.

I expect Providence to make their runs and keep this in possession territory for long stretches. But over forty minutes, Butler’s edge on the glass, a cleaner three-point defense and a steadier half-court backbone should show. This feels more like a late free-throw separation than a wire-to-wire avalanche, which fits what we just learned about leaning too far into blowout scripts against live shooting dogs.

I’m on Butler -5.5, with a projected score of Butler 86, Providence 80.

Best bet: Butler -5.5 (-105) vs. Providence
