Desert Financial gets tempo and contrast more than brand juice. Santa Clara rolls in at 8-2 looking like a WCC contender that already handled real trips to Xavier and Minnesota. Arizona State is 8-2 as well, finally playing with some cohesion ahead of a Big 12 grind, and they lean into chaos more than structure. One side wants half-court precision and clean glass; the other wants live-ball turnovers and runouts. With Santa Clara laying a short -2.5 into a 157.5 total, the number is basically asking which version of good offense travels better. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Arizona State Sun Devils and the Santa Clara Broncos.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
ASU vs. Santa Clara prediction, preview
Santa Clara’s profile is sturdy and grown. The Broncos score 80.8 points and allow 69.3 for a +11.5 margin, shooting 45.4% from the field and trading threes for efficiency rather than volume. They’re plus-5.9 on the glass, grabbing 38.9 rebounds against 33.0 allowed, with several games already north of 40 boards. The scoring is shared but still star-shaped. Christian Hammond gives them 17.2 points per game on 50.5% shooting and 42.5% from three, the primary engine in ball screens and late-clock situations. Bukky Oboye adds 9.1 points and 3.3 rebounds on 70.8% inside finishing, while Allen Graves sits near 9.7 points and 6.2 boards as the glue forward who cleans the glass and stretches just enough from the arc. Around them, Brenton Knapper and Elijah Mahi live in that seven to thirteen point band and keep the assist numbers healthy, which is why Santa Clara has been able to win comfortably even when the three-ball sits near that 31.1% season mark.
Arizona State is more volatile but unquestionably dangerous. The Sun Devils sit around 80.9 points scored and 76.6 allowed, a slimmer +4.3 margin with a defensive profile that leans on pressure more than pristine first-shot contests. They’re scoring efficiently this year, hitting 46.5% from the field and 38.4% from three, but they only pull about 33.4 rebounds a night, which leaves them exposed against heavier frontcourts. Maurice Odum has the on-ball burden at 17.2 points, 5.9 assists and 43.5% from deep while living at 90.2% from the line, exactly the sort of guard who can turn live dribbles into eight straight points. Massamba Diop and Santiago Trouet combine for roughly 20 points and more than 11 rebounds on strong interior efficiency, but they’re more verticality and activity than raw size, which shows when the opponent keeps hammering the defensive glass. The rest of the rotation is wings and combo forwards who all shoot in the mid-30s from three, perfect for Hurley’s preferred “let’s see if we can blow this open in six possessions” style.
Santa Clara vs. ASU pick, best bet
The favorite’s path is easy to picture. Santa Clara plays cleaner half-court offense, is the better rebounding team by about six boards per game, and has already shown it can take its scheme into hostile gyms and keep the math in its favor. If the Broncos own the glass, keep turnovers around that low-teens number and force Arizona State to play through set defense instead of transition, their shot quality edge should show up late. The concern is what we’ve been talking about all December with live dogs: Arizona State shoots it well, lives at the line through Odum’s aggression and has enough length to bother Santa Clara’s guards if this tilts into a whistle-heavy, scramble game.
Still, the Sun Devils’ thinner rebounding and 76.6 points allowed profile leave more room for their defense to crack than Santa Clara’s does. With a short number, I’m willing to trust the sturdier half-court side.
I’m on Santa Clara -2.5, with a projected score of Santa Clara 82, Arizona State 78.
Best bet: Santa Clara -2.5 (-105) at Arizona State
