UT Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros vs. UT Arlington Mavericks prediction, pick for NCAAM on Thursday 12/11/25

Edinburg gets a Texas contrast game tonight. UT Arlington brings a WAC contender’s frame, pounding the glass and defending like every trip is March. UT Rio Grande Valley leans all the way into pace and shooting, happy to trade long rebounds and 3s all night if it means more possessions. The number hangs around UTRGV -2.5 with a total in the mid-140s, basically asking whether the Mavericks’ size and defense can mute the Vaqueros’ fireworks on a true road floor. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the UT Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros and the UT Arlington Mavericks.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

UTRGV vs. UTA prediction, preview

Arlington’s profile looks built for this kind of chaos. The Mavericks are 6-3 with a +10.8 scoring margin, putting up 76.1 points per game and allowing just 65.3. They are hitting 47.1% from the field and living with a noisy 28.1% from deep, because the real edge is on the glass and at the rim. Arlington owns a 40.7–30.2 rebounding edge per night, grabbing 14.2 offensive boards and winning second-chance volume by almost five per game. Opponents shoot only 40.0% overall and 24.3% from 3, which is top-tier stuff once you bake in trips to New Mexico, Weber State and Arkansas State. Raysean Seamster is the fulcrum at 16.3 points and 6.9 rebounds on 55.4% shooting, with Marcell McCreary adding 12.0 points on 46.3% from the floor and 34.3% from deep. Cash Chavis quietly glues it together: 10.2 points and 5.0 assists, more than capable of organizing against pressure and still hunting his own offense.

UTRGV answers with volume from the arc. The Vaqueros are scoring 76.8 points per game and allowing 73.8, living on 45.7% shooting and a blistering 39.1% from 3. They knock down 9.4 threes per game, with Koree Cotton at 12.3 points on 43.0% from the field and 36.0% from deep, and Marvin McGhee at 11.3 points with a 41.0% 3-point stroke. Kye Dickson and Filip Brankovic both sit above 47.0% from behind the line, and Jaylen Washington is at 55.8% from the floor and 50.0% from 3 in his minutes. When UTRGV gets comfortable, you see box scores like 95 points at Southern Utah or 110 at home against Southwestern Adventist, with five and six players in double figures and threes raining from every angle.

UTA vs. UTRGV pick, best bet

The issues show up in the margins. UTRGV is basically even on the glass at 36.8 rebounds against 35.9, and they send opponents to the line more often than they get there themselves: 10.9 made free throws per game versus 15.6 allowed. The defense is leaking 73.8 points, 42.1% from the field and 32.2% from 3, and when the Vaqueros have stepped up in class, the opposing scoreboard has climbed: 96 for Baylor, 85 for Boise State, 87 for Illinois, 73 for Stephen F. Austin. They can absolutely shoot their way into an upset, but they also give you every statistical door back into the game if you are disciplined.

Arlington feels like the more complete operation right now. The Mavericks have already handled multiple road environments, have a clear identity through Seamster and the frontcourt, and own structural advantages UTRGV has not solved all season. A team that wins the glass by more than 10 boards per game and holds opponents below 25.0% from 3 is exactly the wrong kind of visitor for a roster that wants this decided on jump shots. If Arlington can keep its turnovers around its season average and get even a decent night from deep, the free-throw and rebounding math should tilt this away from the favorite.

I am happy grabbing the points with the tougher defense and the grown-man rebounding edge. Arlington’s size should squeeze UTRGV’s drive-and-kick game, turn long misses into runouts, and slowly drag the shot diet closer to mid-range than UTRGV wants.

Give me UT Arlington +2.5, in a game that plays a tick under the total if the Mavericks control tempo and the line inflates a bit.

Call it UT Arlington 74, UT Rio Grande Valley 70.

Best bet: UT Arlington +2.5 (-110) at UT Rio Grande Valley
