The Dome gets a throwback intersectional feel tonight. Syracuse comes home from a bruising stretch against Houston, Kansas and Iowa State with a 5-3 mark and a real defensive identity. Saint Joseph’s arrives at 6-3, riding a four-game streak that includes a win over Princeton and a one-point escape against Temple. The market has settled around Syracuse -12.5 with a total near 146.5, daring you to decide whether ACC length and a top-twenty defense can smother an A-10 guard trio that lives off volume threes. This is also a clash of free-throw extremes, with one team near automatic and the other sitting dead last in Division I. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Syracuse Orange and the St. Joseph’s Hawks.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Syracuse vs. St. Joe’s prediction, preview
Saint Joe’s offense is built around Deuce Jones, Derek Simpson and Jaiden Glover-Toscano. The Hawks are scoring 77.3 points per game on 43.0% shooting, with 40.2 rebounds and 16.8 assists, leaning on the arc for more than 40% of their attempts despite a 28.2% team clip from three. Jones is at 15.6 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.1 assists, hitting 40.2% from the floor and 81.0% at the line. Simpson quietly leads them in rebounds and assists at 11.4 points, 5.3 boards and 4.0 dimes, with 46.3% shooting and a ridiculous 94.4% on free throws. Glover adds 13.6 points and 4.2 rebounds, burying 2.6 threes per game at 37.7%. When the Hawks get comfortable, you see nights like the 100 they hung on Rutgers-Camden or the 87 they dropped on Coppin State with 14 made threes. The issue is that their defense gives 74.4 points on 41.9% shooting and forces only 10.9 turnovers per night, an efficiency profile that slots in the 150s nationally.
Syracuse’s shape is almost the mirror image: ordinary offense, nasty defense. The Orange score 73.3 points and allow 64.6, holding opponents to 38.3% from the field and 30.7% from three. Those numbers come after facing Houston, Kansas and Iowa State in a four-day Las Vegas gauntlet, then beating Tennessee 62-60 in a rock fight. Donnie Freeman has looked like a one-and-done forward, averaging 17.8 points and 5.2 rebounds on 50.0% shooting and 77.8% at the stripe. Kiyan Anthony chips in 11.2 points on 44.0% shooting, a developing wing scorer who can pile points in a hurry. William Kyle gives them 9.9 points and 7.9 rebounds while shooting 69.6% at the rim and erasing shots with 22 blocks in eight games. Naithan George is the organizer, averaging 8.6 points and more than five assists, helping Syracuse sit top twenty in scoring defense and top twenty-five in opponent field-goal percentage.
The cleanest Syracuse case starts with that length and rim protection turned loose on a jump-shot heavy opponent. Saint Joe’s takes 26.0 threes per game and makes just 7.3; now it faces a defense holding teams under 31.0% from deep and under 39.0% overall. Syracuse has already survived Monmouth’s spacing, then sat on Tennessee for sixty points; it should be comfortable pushing pace off misses against a Hawk defense that ranks outside the top two hundred in points allowed and does not generate steals. If Kyle, Nate Kingz and Sadiq White own the glass against a smaller front line that spreads rebounding across the roster, Syracuse can tilt this toward transition and opportunistic threes from Anthony and Tyler Betsey without ever needing pristine half-court execution.
St. Joe’s vs. Syracuse pick, best bet
The danger is that free throws keep the underdog breathing. Saint Joe’s is shooting 81.3% at the line, with Jones, Glover, Simpson and Austin Williford all above 80.0%. Syracuse is at 57.3%, dead last in the country, despite getting to the stripe 22.3 times per game. In a spread range like -12.5, missed front ends and empty late trips are exactly how a comfortable double-digit lead turns into a push or a bad beat. Saint Joe’s also brings a rebounding edge on paper at 40.2 boards to 35.9, and if the Hawks stay even on the glass while cashing every whistle, they can hang around long enough for one Glover heat-check stretch to matter.
I still land on Syracuse’s defensive ceiling and athletic gap carrying the night. The Orange have already absorbed punches from three top-ten level teams and come out with a top-twenty scoring defense; Saint Joe’s just gave up 99 to UNLV and 94 to Virginia Tech when the talent level jumped. If Syracuse keeps Saint Joe’s under its 28.2% season clip from three and turns those long misses into runouts, the math leans toward a controlled blowout rather than a frantic final minute. I expect the Hawks’ guards to have to work for every catch against length they have not seen since Vegas, while Freeman and Kyle live around the rim on the other end.
I’m hitting Syracuse -12.5, with a slight lean to the under 146.5 as the Orange defense drags Saint Joe’s below its average. I see it Syracuse 78, Saint Joseph’s 62.
Best bet: Syracuse -12.5 (-110) vs. St. Joe’s
