Iowa State Cyclones vs. Iowa Hawkeyes prediction, pick for NCAAM on Thursday 12/11/25

Hilton Coliseum turns Cy-Hawk into a pressure cooker, not a rivalry graphic. Iowa State is 9-0, No. 4 in the polls, fresh off humiliating No. 1 Purdue 81-58 on the road. Iowa walks in at 8-1 with a glossy record, but its first real stress tests exposed how thin the shot creation is behind Bennett Stirtz. The market has pushed this to Iowa State -11.5 with a total around 140.5, basically asking whether Hilton and the Cyclones’ two-way machine bury an overachieving roster from across the state. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Iowa State Cyclones and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Iowa State vs. Iowa prediction, preview

Most metrics say Iowa State is playing like a national title contender. They are scoring 94.6 points per game on 54.9% from the field and 43.8% from three, with 19.2 assists against only 11.2 turnovers. They rebound 35.9 times per night and hold opponents to the mid-60s, driving a double-digit average margin that fits the eye test. Efficiency models have them top six in offense and top two in defense, with an overall margin above +30 points per 100 possessions and tempo around 70 possessions. Milan Momcilovic leads the burst at 18.3 points in 27.3 minutes, hitting 54.2% from the floor, 53.6% from three and 85.7% at the line. Joshua Jefferson adds 17.6 points, 6.7 rebounds and 5.4 assists on 56.6% shooting and 45.0% from deep, and Tamin Lipsey brings 16.8 points, 5.7 assists and 2.7 steals. Three different guards can run the offense, punish switches and turn live-ball turnovers into instant runs. In Hilton, that becomes a storm.

Iowa’s résumé looks fine at a glance, yet the underlying shape is fragile. The Hawkeyes are scoring 79.9 points per game on 51.7% shooting, with 37.7% from three and 73.7% at the line, while allowing only 62.6 points and about 43.6% from the field. That is a +17.3 average margin that came mostly against weaker opponents. The Big Ten preview noted that when they stepped up in class, the offense cratered to 52 and 59 points, and only one player is averaging more than 8.8 points. That player is Stirtz, and he has been excellent: 18.8 points, 4.9 assists and 1.8 steals per game on 50.5% shooting, 45.1% from three and 80.0% at the stripe. Cooper Koch gives 8.8 points and 4.0 rebounds on 58.7% from the field and 50.0% from deep, but the rest of the rotation clusters in the 7–9 point range. This is a first-year coach, portal-heavy roster that looks clean when the initial actions hit but does not yet have multiple counters when the first option is removed.

Iowa vs. Iowa State pick, best bet

The best case for Iowa is that Stirtz stays hot, Koch continues to stretch the floor, and Iowa State finally cools off after the Purdue spike. Double-digit rivalry dogs always have some appeal, especially when the underdog can shoot and has been living at 50% from the floor. If Iowa protects the ball, keeps the defensive glass honest and shoots near its 37.7% from 3, it can hang inside a number this big. Hilton is furious, but emotion cuts both ways. Early whistles on Momcilovic or Jefferson would force Iowa State deeper into the bench than it has needed in recent blowouts.

I still think the Cyclones’ physicality, depth and defensive ceiling matter more than rivalry volatility. Iowa State has three different guards who can attack Stirtz in space, three different forwards who can switch and still protect the rim, and a defensive shell that just turned the best offense in the country into rubble. Iowa’s entire scoring structure leans on one legitimate creator and a lot of role players punching above their weight against weaker teams. That is not the profile you want walking into Hilton against a top-two defense that thrives on turnover pressure and denies clean catch-and-shoot looks.

I am willing to lay the wood. Iowa State’s offense should drag this toward the low 70s in possessions, and its defense should drag Iowa far away from that 79.9-point average. I expect Cyclones runs built off steals, defensive rebounds and quick threes to break the Hawkeyes’ rhythm by the middle of the second half. I am on Iowa State -11.5, with a slight lean to the under as the Cyclones choke off Iowa’s scoring.

Call it Iowa State 78, Iowa 60.

Best bet: Iowa State -11.5 (-115) vs. Iowa
