Sure, Bucky Irving is the hot name on the Buccaneers, but that doesn’t mean there’s not room for multiple backs to succeed. When the former was injured for much of the campaign, Rachaad White stepped in and served as the lead runner in his stead. While he didn’t post monster numbers, White did play his role fairly well and has even shown a capability to produce alongside his teammate in a couple of outings — twice this season, he’s tallied at least 10 carries for 50+ yards while operating in a split backfield. The Falcons have experienced a rather miserable season, so the matchup looks quite good for the Tampa Bay offense. Atlanta allows 131.0 rushing yards per game on an average carry of 4.5 yards, both ranked 24th among all NFL run defenses. The interior of the defensive line is particularly soft, and with the Falcons also sitting 26th in defensive EPA/carry, there’s reason to believe the Buccaneers will pound the rock in this one. Couple that stat with the fact the Bucs likely play with positive game script against an offense led by Kirk Cousins without Drake London on the field as well, and suddenly the outlook for rush attempts only increases with a lead throughout the contest.
On DraftKings Sportsbook, White’s prop bet lines are set at O/U 16.5 rushing yards with +330 odds to score an anytime touchdown.
While there’s some risk involved if Irving takes on a larger role or the Buccaneers play from behind, we just saw White manage 11 carries in a competitive loss last week and he tallied 10 rush attempts back in Week 2 alongside Irving as well. In games with both backs active, White has gone over the 16.5-yard mark in three of six possible chances. He’s a bigger-bodied runner than his counterpart and may see more short-yardage work than anything else, but with an average of 4.1 YPC, he can still put forth a solid effort with a little bit of space in front of him. If the game script does play out as I anticipate with Tampa Bay building a significant lead against an opponent that’s quite depleted on offense, I do quite like White’s chances of going over his 16.5-yard listing.
The Buccaneers will likely want to spell Irving some during this contest to keep their star healthy ahead of a potential playoff run. If The Bucs do indeed play from ahead and run the ball to chew the clock, there’s a solid chance White gets around 12 or so rush attempts in a 1B role. Even if he doesn’t see as much work though, even five or six carries could be enough to exceed this low line. It’s worth taking a look at, but for a bigger payout, I do like White to score a touchdown as well. Tampa Bay should move the ball with relative ease, and the halfback has remained involved in the red zone even since Irving came back. He has two red-zone carries to Irving’s three over the last two weeks, and saw three attempts to Irving’s seven during the first four weeks of action. As long as he gets a couple of chances, the +330 odds make White worthy of a long-shot play to score.
