A Wednesday evening proving ground: VCU trying to prove last March’s A-10 sweep wasn’t a blip under a new staff, New Mexico trying to show its 7-2 start travels out of The Pit. The Rams are 6-3 and 4-0 at home with that familiar VCU buzz building around a top-50 efficiency profile. The Lobos roll in on a four-game win streak, fresh off a 98-71 demolition of Santa Clara that pushed them to the top of the Mountain West table. This is a pedigree game for both, and the market’s treating it like VCU is multiple tiers clear. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the VCU Rams and the New Mexico Lobos.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
VCU vs. New Mexico prediction, preview
On raw firepower, NC State absolutely looks the part of a big favorite. The Wolfpack are scoring 89.2 points per game on 50.0% from the field, 39.8% from three and 77.0% at the line, with an estimated 58.8% effective field goal percentage. They’ve outscored opponents 803-682 through nine games and sit at +13.4 in average margin, with a 35.6-32.9 rebounding edge per night. Darrion Williams operates like a do-everything hub at 16.7 points and 4.8 rebounds per game on 53.9% shooting and 47.6% from deep, while guard Quadir Copeland adds 14.4 points on 60.3% from the floor and 56.3% from three with roughly five assists per game. Ven-Allen Lubin quietly stabilizes the interior at 13.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and a ridiculous 67.6% from the field. Wade’s group is sharing it at 16.9 assists with only 10.4 turnovers per game, and they live in four-out spacing where anyone can rip a closeout.
But Liberty’s offense is every bit as sophisticated, and the numbers are flat-out outrageous so far. The Flames are 6-2, scoring 84.8 points per game while holding opponents to 64.4, and they’re doing it on 54.7% from the field and 43.1% from three. That translates to an estimated 65.6% effective field goal percentage with fully 50.5% of their shots coming from beyond the arc. Their ball movement is pristine: 18.8 assists against only 8.5 turnovers per game, good for about a 2.21 assist-to-turnover ratio. Guard Brett Decker is averaging 19.6 points on 54.4% shooting and 58.7% from three, Kaden Metheny adds 14.1 points with 48.8% from the field and 37.9% from deep, and Colin Porter chips in 11.3 points and 3.2 assists while hitting 40.0% from three. Zach Cleveland is the connective tissue, averaging 10.2 points and 9.0 boards with 57.6% shooting and doing all the dirty rotation work.
The matchup tension lives on NC State’s defensive end. Wade’s McNeese teams built their identity on a havoc-heavy, triple-switch scheme that squeezed the rim and forced bad decisions. This Wolfpack version has not reached that level yet. They’re allowing 75.8 points per game on 43.5% shooting overall and 35.2% from three, and advanced metrics have them outside the national top 80 in defensive efficiency. As Action Network notes, opponents are getting up nearly 50% of their attempts from deep and converting 52% on twos, which is exactly the shot profile Liberty’s motion offense wants to exploit. Ritchie McKay’s group ranks in the national top 10 in two-point percentage, three-point percentage and turnover rate, so you’re giving an elite precision offense both volume and space.
New Mexico vs. VCU pick, best bet
The counter is simple: Siegel Center plus depth plus whistle could absolutely turn this into a Rams avalanche. They’re drawing almost 28 free throws per game but hitting only 69.8%, so the parade to the line doesn’t always translate cleanly into separation. If New Mexico is even ordinary on the defensive glass and keeps VCU closer to its season-long 3-point percentage instead of the recent heaters, the Rams’ path to winning by double digits looks narrower than the number suggests. The Lobos have scored 93 or more in three straight, and while that likely cools against this defense, their balance gives them real “counter-run” equity whenever the building starts to swell.
Market-wise, we’re staring at VCU around -9.5 with a total sitting in the mid-150s. That’s a lot of respect for a very good home side against another top-100 offense that can shoot, share, and guard the arc. I see VCU still winning most scripts on physicality and free throws, but New Mexico’s shooting profile and turnover pressure travel well enough to keep this inside a full three-possession margin. Give me the dog catching points in what should feel more like a two-possession game than a blowout.
I’m on New Mexico +8.5, with VCU surviving at home, something like VCU 80, New Mexico 74.
Best bet: New Mexico +8.5 (+100) at VCU
