Wednesday night in Raleigh gives us a new-look heavyweight trying to reestablish itself and a mid-major that never blinks at pedigree. NC State under Will Wade is still figuring out how its transfers fit, but the bones of a top-tier ACC offense are obvious. Liberty shows up as a rare true-road Quad 1 shot, a program that has spent a decade begging for exactly this kind of game. The two coaches know each other’s playbook almost too well after years of crossing paths, which only sharpens the edges. This feels more like a March scouting mission than a sleepy December game. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the NC State Wolfpack and the Liberty Flames.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
NC State vs. Liberty prediction, preview
On raw firepower, NC State absolutely looks the part of a big favorite. The Wolfpack are scoring 89.2 points per game on 50.0% from the field, 39.8% from three and 77.0% at the line, with an estimated 58.8% effective field goal percentage. They’ve outscored opponents 803-682 through nine games and sit at +13.4 in average margin, with a 35.6-32.9 rebounding edge per night. Darrion Williams operates like a do-everything hub at 16.7 points and 4.8 rebounds per game on 53.9% shooting and 47.6% from deep, while guard Quadir Copeland adds 14.4 points on 60.3% from the floor and 56.3% from three with roughly five assists per game. Ven-Allen Lubin quietly stabilizes the interior at 13.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and a ridiculous 67.6% from the field. Wade’s group is sharing it at 16.9 assists with only 10.4 turnovers per game, and they live in four-out spacing where anyone can rip a closeout.
But Liberty’s offense is every bit as sophisticated, and the numbers are flat-out outrageous so far. The Flames are 6-2, scoring 84.8 points per game while holding opponents to 64.4, and they’re doing it on 54.7% from the field and 43.1% from three. That translates to an estimated 65.6% effective field goal percentage with fully 50.5% of their shots coming from beyond the arc. Their ball movement is pristine: 18.8 assists against only 8.5 turnovers per game, good for about a 2.21 assist-to-turnover ratio. Guard Brett Decker is averaging 19.6 points on 54.4% shooting and 58.7% from three, Kaden Metheny adds 14.1 points with 48.8% from the field and 37.9% from deep, and Colin Porter chips in 11.3 points and 3.2 assists while hitting 40.0% from three. Zach Cleveland is the connective tissue, averaging 10.2 points and 9.0 boards with 57.6% shooting and doing all the dirty rotation work.
The matchup tension lives on NC State’s defensive end. Wade’s McNeese teams built their identity on a havoc-heavy, triple-switch scheme that squeezed the rim and forced bad decisions. This Wolfpack version has not reached that level yet. They’re allowing 75.8 points per game on 43.5% shooting overall and 35.2% from three, and advanced metrics have them outside the national top 80 in defensive efficiency. As Action Network notes, opponents are getting up nearly 50% of their attempts from deep and converting 52% on twos, which is exactly the shot profile Liberty’s motion offense wants to exploit. Ritchie McKay’s group ranks in the national top 10 in two-point percentage, three-point percentage and turnover rate, so you’re giving an elite precision offense both volume and space.
Liberty vs NC State pick, best bet
Liberty will absolutely give ground physically; they’re basically even on the glass at 32.0-31.0 per game and don’t have a traditional rim intimidator. That’s where Williams and Lubin can punish them on switches, especially if the Flames’ guards get pinned in early-clock cross-matches. But Liberty doesn’t foul a ton, they dig in with help rotations, and McKay’s pack-line principles are built to make you beat them with patient, multi-pass possessions. Add the context: this is Liberty’s first true road game but a circled one, a rare Quad 1 chance against a coach who has made a career out of scheduling them. NC State, meanwhile, just got back from Maui, handled UNC Asheville, and has Kansas waiting on deck. The Wolfpack will respect Liberty, but human nature says the bigger emotional spike sits three days away.
The market has NC State around -12.5 with a total near 152.5. On what these teams have actually shown, this feels closer to an eight- or nine-point gap than a two-possession blowout beyond that. Both offenses should hum, both backcourts are loaded with shot-makers, and Liberty’s combination of 65.6% effective field goal percentage and elite ball security is exactly how you survive on the road as a double-digit dog. I expect NC State to win, but I trust Liberty’s spacing, guard play and familiarity with Wade’s schemes to keep this inside the number.
I’m on Liberty +12.5 (-105), and I’d still be comfortable down to +11.5. Call it NC State 83, Liberty 75.
Best bet: Liberty +12.5 (-105) at NC State
