After taking a big swing and miss on Kyle Schwarber, it appears that the Orioles have their new man.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Pete Alonso has agreed to a five-year, $155 million deal with Baltimore, meaning the Mets all-time home run leader will no longer call the Big Apple home.
The contract has to be considered a massive win for Alonso and agent Scott Boras, who was unable to get the hulking first baseman the long-term deal he sought in free agency last winter. As such, Alonso re-signed on a one-year deal with New York (with an option) in hopes of hitting a friendlier market heading into 2026.
Alonso responded with arguably his best statistical campaign since his monstrous rookie season, slashing .272/.347/.524 with 38 home runs, 126 RBI and a career-high .385 expected wOBA. Alonso’s 141 wRC+ was also his best since smacking 53 homers in 2019.
This is also a victory for the Orioles, who took a huge step back in 2025, finishing 12 games below .500. Once considered one of the best lineups in baseball with a roster chalked full of young talent, Baltimore experienced down and injury-plagued seasons from Gunnar Henderson, Adley Rutschman, Jordan Westburg and Colton Cowser. Alonso not only gives the team an offensive hub in the middle of the order, but he legitimizes new owner David Rubenstein’s promise to spend big.
