Marshall Thundering Herd vs. Western Kentucky Hilltoppers prediction, pick for NCAAM on Wednesday 12/10/25

Cam Henderson Center should feel familiar tonight, even if the nameplates on the jerseys have shuffled. Western Kentucky and Marshall spent years trading blows in Conference USA, and the rivalry never really cooled. Now they meet in a December nonconference slot with both fanbases starving for a statement and a building that gets loud on even a sleepy weeknight. Both teams want to live in the open floor, both have scoring guards who think every miss is a mistake, and the number hanging in the low 160s tells you the books expect chaos. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Marshall Thundering Herd and the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Marshall vs. Western Kentucky prediction, preview

Western Kentucky brings the more stable engine into that chaos. The Hilltoppers are 6-2, scoring 85.8 points per game and allowing 78.5, with a +8.1 scoring margin that screams “their good stretches last longer than their bad ones.” They shoot about 44% from the field and just under 33% from three, but the real edge is volume: 23.0 made free throws on 31.4 attempts per game and 41.3 rebounds. Teagan Moore is the headline at 19.6 points, 6.0 boards and 2.6 assists on 50.5% shooting and 88.2% at the line, a big wing who can bully smaller Marshall forwards. Bryant Selebangue adds 10.5 points and 6.7 rebounds, giving them a grown-man interior presence. Then there’s the bench: Western’s reserves are contributing 36.0 points per night, and Ryan Myers just walked off an 80-79 win over Evansville with 27 points and seven made threes. That kind of secondary punch is what survives a road whistle.

They also defend in a way that travels. Western forces 9.1 steals and carries a +3.9 turnover margin, turning opponents over while only giving it away 11.3 times per game. Opponents are shooting 41.4% from the field and around 34% from deep, which is more solid than elite, but in a high-possession environment, extra trips matter as much as raw field-goal percentage. Efficiency sites have them with an adjusted offensive number a tick above 108 and a defense around 106, playing at roughly 72 possessions per game, which puts them top 25 nationally in pace but still on the right side of the efficiency ledger. That combination of tempo and control is why they already look more like a finished product than a December experiment.

Marshall is the dangerous opposite: volatile, explosive, and absolutely tied to the three-point line. The Herd sit at 5-4, scoring 80.1 points and allowing 79.6, basically playing coin-flip basketball with a +0.5 margin. They knock down 10.2 threes per game on their way to a scoring profile in the low 80s, and when they get hot, the Henderson Center feels like it’s tilting. Forward Wyatt Fricks is having a breakout year at 14.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists on 54.3% shooting and 39.0% from three, stretching defenses from 25 feet with a 6-foot-10 frame. Jalen Speer pushes pace with 12.9 points and 5.8 assists, while Matt Van Komen controls the glass at 10.4 points and 7.8 rebounds with 2.6 blocks. The structure is modern: a stretch big, a true rim protector, and multiple guards bombing away.

Western Kentucky vs. Marshall pick, best bet

The problem is how thin the margin becomes when those threes aren’t falling. Marshall’s defense is giving up just under 80 points per game, opponents are comfortably in the mid-40s from the field and low-30s from deep, and their best wins have come when they simply outshoot teams. Hank Plona distilled it perfectly from the Western side this week: when Marshall has hit 10 or more threes, it has won; nine or fewer, it has lost. That is a great story for a rivalry preview and a terrifying one if you are trying to lay wood with a team that just got drilled at Virginia and rides a three-game losing streak into this spot. Efficiency ratings back that up: Marshall grades a bit below water overall, with an adjusted offense just north of 107 and a defense around 109.

In a rivalry game with pace, I care about who wins the non-shooting math. Western Kentucky brings more free throws, a better turnover profile, deeper scoring off the bench and a slight efficiency edge that most models would translate to roughly a four-point neutral-court advantage. The market has shaded toward Marshall’s building, hanging the Herd around -1.5 with a total hovering between 161.5 and 163.5. I respect how violent this Marshall shooting profile can be, and I think the total lands in the mid-160s more often than not. But if the number is essentially asking me to pick the winner with a tiny tax for the home floor, I would rather ride the team getting points that is better in the aggregate and more flexible in how it scores.

I expect a frantic, entertaining game where both teams live in transition and the whistle stays busy, but Western’s ability to generate free throws and turnovers should matter late. Give me the deeper, more balanced Hilltoppers to finally snap Marshall’s three-point script and steal the one that counts.

Western Kentucky outright. Final score: Western Kentucky 84, Marshall 81.

Best bet: Western Kentucky (+100) at Marshall
