Fort Worth gets the late window tonight, and this one feels bigger than the listing. Notre Dame walks in with a grown-up résumé already, having taken swings at Ohio State, Kansas and Houston without flinching. TCU just flew home with a trophy from the Rady Children’s Invitational, where they handled Florida and then leaned on defense to choke Wisconsin. Schollmaier will buzz like a real test, not a buy game. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the TCU Horned Frogs and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
TCU vs. Notre Dame prediction, preview
TCU’s edge starts where we care most now: repeatable pressure. They are top tier nationally in defensive efficiency, living off about 9 steals and roughly 17 forced turnovers per game. That Rady run was exactly their blueprint. Florida saw 19 turnovers and constant ball pressure, then Wisconsin coughed it up 17 times and shot barely mid-30s from the floor. Brock Harding averaged 17.5 points and 8.5 assists in that event, but the important piece is his 3 steals per night and how he turns those into clean transition. David Punch gives them a downhill scorer at almost 60% from the field with real glass work, and the rotation stacks length at every perimeter spot. They are not asking to win with a one-week heater from three; they are asking to win by getting extra possessions and easier shots.
Notre Dame brings a different kind of danger. Markus Burton is a grown shot-maker already, around 20 points per game with strong efficiency and foul drawing. The Missouri win showed the full package, with Burton orchestrating late and Cole Certa splashing 4 threes, including the dagger with under 17 seconds left. As a team they shoot around 47% from the floor and mid-30s from deep, with opponents held near 32% from three. They have already spent real minutes against high-end defenses, and they are not going to be rattled just because TCU throws another wave of athletes at them. On talent and coaching, this is one of the sharper underdog guards we will see in December.
The gap, for me, is in how each offense sustains itself over 40 minutes. Notre Dame’s efficiency leans heavily on jumper quality and Burton’s individual shot-making. Their turnover numbers sit near neutral, their free-throw volume is fine rather than overwhelming, and they are not living on second chances. TCU builds its scoring on livelier foundations. They generate a healthy free-throw diet, move the ball to about 16 assists a night and push tempo off mistakes. KenPom has both teams rated slightly unlucky so far, but TCU’s profile is driven by defensive floor and paint pressure, not just pretty eFG. When whistles get weird and legs get heavy, I trust the side that can still win with steals, rim touches and offensive rebounds.
Notre Dame vs. TCU pick, best bet
Notre Dame’s path is clear and real. If they keep the turnover margin even, make TCU execute in the half court and Burton wins enough late-clock possessions, this looks like a tight, single-possession game deep into the second half. The Irish have already stood up to long athletes this season. But that script requires tidy ball security for 40 minutes and continued efficiency on guarded jumpers in a true road gym. TCU’s path asks for something more stable: keep the pressure ratcheted, win the live-ball turnover count and attack a defense that prefers to be set.
The market is hanging TCU around minus 7 and a hook. That feels short once you bake in their home edge, the way their pressure has already scaled against ranked opponents and the fact that Notre Dame’s best hope rests on the most volatile part of basketball. I expect TCU to drag this game into their style, with stretches where Notre Dame is just trying to inbound cleanly and survive waves of traps. Burton and Certa will hit enough shots to keep it honest, but over 40 minutes the possession math should favor the Horned Frogs. I’m laying it.
Final score: TCU 73, Notre Dame 62.
Best bet: TCU -7.5 (-105) vs. Notre Dame
