Provident Credit Union Event Center gets the late West Coast slot, and this one feels like a quiet math test. San José State has worn a tough schedule and a 3-5 record, with Utah, UC Santa Barbara, Michigan State and UC Irvine already on the ledger. San Diego shows up 3-4 with three straight losses and no road wins, still figuring out a new rotation and a fragile frontcourt. The market hangs 143.5 and a mid-70s Spartan team total like this will suddenly become a free-flowing shootout. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the San Jose State Spartans and the San Diego Toreros.

SJSU vs. SDSU prediction, preview
The raw scoring line says the Spartans average 72 points and allow 71.8, shooting 44.2% from the field and 35.5% from three. Look underneath and it is shakier. They dropped 110 on non-Division I Bethesda; in the other seven games they sit around 67 points a night, with only two outings above 75. The profile is streaky: 68.2% at the line, 32.5 rebounds, only 11 assists and 11.3 turnovers per game. Colby Garland is doing heavy lifting at 17.6 points and 4 assists, Yaphet Moundi punishes the glass at 8.8 boards, but the offense lives on jumpers and individual bursts instead of a stable, machine-like attack. That is not the kind of shape I want to trust to clear a mid-70s team total.
San Diego’s flaws line up in ways that actually help the under more than the over. The Toreros average 71.3 points and give up 75, shooting 46.1% from the field and 34.5% from deep, but they grab only 28.3 rebounds and sit way down the national boards table. They are better at making free throws than getting them, hitting 78.2% at the stripe but not living there. They do, however, defend the arc reasonably, holding opponents near 32% from three, and their own pace is middle-of-the-pack rather than breakneck. Combine that with San José State’s 32.5 boards and low assist numbers, and you get a game with a lot of one-and-done trips and long, half-court possessions instead of constant transition.
The Spartans’ efficiency edge is mostly perimeter shot-making, not a parade of layups and free throws, and that is the first thing to wobble when legs get tired. Their assist rate and free-throw percentage both sit in the bottom third of Division I, while the rebounding edge is real but more about preventing runouts than fueling huge totals. San Diego’s weakness on the glass should give San José State extra possessions, but extra possessions into a 72-point offense that has already posted 51, 60, 63 and 63 against Division I teams do not scream “75-plus is automatic.” The kicker: across their recent stretch, these two are 9-1 to the under, barely cracking 140 combined points on average. Books are now pricing something closer to an outlier than the median.
SDSU vs. SJSU pick, best bet
There is a real risk script, and it starts with whistles. If Garland lives at the line, Moundi piles up put-backs and San Diego’s thin front line stacks fouls, you can get dragged toward the mid-70s just on volume. A random Toreros turnover binge into Spartan threes also exists in the universe. But those are exactly the kinds of things we want to fade: single-game shooting heaters and foul fests, not the day-to-day reality of a team with average pace, shaky free throws and only two games north of 75 against Division I opposition.
I want my money on San José State looking like itself, not its ceiling. The schedule weight, the shooting-dependent profile and the recent scoring history all point toward a more modest number. Give me the Spartans to win the game, but to land below what the market is asking on their team total Let’s go San José State team total under 76.5 (playable down to 73.5).
