The Kennesaw State Owls will take on the Jacksonville State Gamecocks in the Conference USA Championship Game on Friday night.

It’s perhaps the least talked-about championship game of the weekend because there are no College Football Playoff implications. Still, it should be an exciting matchup between two programs on the rise. Kennesaw State is one of the great stories in college football this season. The Owls came up to the FBS level just last season and went 2-10 in their first FBS campaign. Jerry Mack came in and turned things around, taking this team to the conference title game in its second season at the FBS level.
Similarly, Jacksonville State just came up to the FBS level in 2023. However, unlike Kennesaw State, the Gamecocks hit the ground running right away. Rich Rodriguez won nine games in the team’s first season at the FBS level, then won the Conference USA championship in 2024. The Gamecocks are now looking to make it two straight conference titles on Friday night. The fact that both of these two programs are playing for a conference title so soon into their FBS tenures is a model for other programs to follow in the future.
Kennesaw State quarterback Amari Odom has been great this season, helping elevate this from winning two games all season to competing for a conference title. Odom did not enter the season as the starter, and for the first several games of the season, Kennesaw State used multiple quarterbacks. However, Odom’s dual-threat abilities were the clear best option for the Owls by the time conference play rolled around.
Odom logged double-digit rush attempts and a rushing touchdown in each of the team’s last three regular-season games. That includes a game against Jacksonville State, where Odom rushed for 51 yards and a score. Jacksonville State ranks 91st in the nation in defensive EPA/rush, and Kennesaw State should attack them on the ground. Odom has been playing great and showed what he could do on the ground when these teams faced off a few weeks ago. He should have a similarly productive game on Friday night as the Owls look to win their first-ever FBS conference title.
