Brandon Hagel First Goalscorer (+1000)
My strategy is to avoid chalk plays and identify teams that either score or allow tons of first-period goals. Enter Brandon Hagel (+1000), who has netted eight goals in the past six games. Because of this, he may end up being a bit chalky, but it’s hard to ignore his recent scoring surge, on top of Tampa Bay’s first-period excellence.
The 27-year-old leads the Lightning in goals this season (15) and plays on the first line alongside Anthony Cirelli and Nikita Kucherov. As a team, Tampa Bay has scored 33 first-period goals, good for the most in the NHL. Hagel has contributed six of those 33 first-period goals himself, with five of his most recent eight goals coming in the first period as well. Another big thing I look for when identifying my top pick is whether or not the player produces at 5v5, and Hagel does just that. He ranks 18th in the NHL in 5v5 goals per 60 and eighth in 5v5 xGoals per 60. The goaltending in Pittsburgh has been surprisingly good this season, but the Lightning are 8-2-0 in their last 10 games, while averaging 3.8 goals per game.
