UPDATE: Doc Rivers and the Bucks believe that Giannis has avoided an Achilles injury.
Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo suffered a calf strain and will not return during Wednesday’s game vs. the Detroit Pistons.
In the opening minutes of the first quarter, Antetokounmpo made a pass while falling out of bounds and picked up an assist. He immediately started jogging back on defense but appeared to suffer a non-contact injury and fell to the ground. He sat on the court for a short time before heading back to the locker room.
Per ESPN’s Shams Charania, it’s a calf strain for the big man.
Antetokounmpo played just three minutes on Wednesday. He scored two points, pulled down one rebound and dished one assist during his short time in the game.
It’s been a dramatic day for the two-time MVP after reports emerged that he and his agent are set to meet with the Bucks’ organization about his future with the team. Antetokounmpo averages 30.6 points, 10.7 rebounds and 6.4 assists per game, playing at an all-world level just days before his 31st birthday. With that level of production, it’s easy to see why trade rumors are swirling as the losses pile up for his team.
The Bucks are just 9-13 this season, a rough start for a franchise with aspirations of making the postseason yet again. An injury to Milwaukee’s superstar would bring just another blow to the organization as it struggles to find its footing.
