Despite the three consecutive draws, I’m backing Real Madrid to get back on track in this one. They have the best road record in La Liga, with 15 points from their eight away matches. They will need another good away performance on Wednesday to get a win against a tough Athletic Club side. Athletic sit in eighth place in the table, winning six, drawing two and losing six of their first 14 games. It’s been a perfectly average start, but will they have enough to get a result against a team like Real?
My verdict is no. They have played two of the teams in the current top four and lost both. Earlier in the season, they fell to Villarreal 1-0. They played Barcelona just a few weeks ago and lost 4-0. In the Champions League, they only have one win out of five. When Athletic Club face off against big teams this season, it usually doesn’t go well.
Real Madrid have got the better of this matchup in recent seasons and I think they will again on Wednesday. They’ve won three of the last four La Liga games between these sides, and I would be surprised if they don’t make it four out of the last five in this one.
