It was a wire-to-wire blowout for the Irish last Saturday, taking down Syracuse 70-7. The most shocking statistic, other than the final score, was CJ Carr’s 49 total passing yards. Elite defense and special teams, along with a dominant running game, made throwing the ball unnecessary. Still, despite his lack of usage, the freshman passer has impressed this season. Through 11 games, he’s recorded 2,536 passing yards and 22 touchdowns while giving up just six interceptions.
Notre Dame’s running back duo of Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price has steamrolled most schools. However, success on the ground could prove more difficult on Saturday. The Cardinal are holding opponents to 113.1 rushing yards per game, sixth-best in the ACC. With that being said, the team’s secondary has been far more vulnerable. Opponents are gaining 284.5 passing yards per game vs. Stanford, the conference’s second-worst mark. Following a light workload vs. the Orange, expect Carr to come out firing tonight. Even if this becomes a blowout, 224 yards isn’t the most intimidating total for the freshman.

Predicting any kind of offensive success for Stanford feels generous. After all, this is the ACC’s lowest scoring offense (18.7 PPG). In comparison, Notre Dame has been lights out on defense since the start of October. A big day through the air feels unlikely for the Cardinal. All-American cornerback Leonard Moore and this Irish secondary are averaging nearly two interceptions per game. Cardinal quarterback Ben Gulbranson was replaced this month by backup Elijah Brown. The results have been middling for the freshman through two starts: 407 passing yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
If Stanford is going to keep this close, dominating time of possession is crucial. Even if the team fails to run the ball effectively, draining clock early may limit what Notre Dame can do offensively. That means a steady flow of touches should be in store for Micah Ford. The running back has been solid this season, especially given the lack of supporting talent. Over nine games, he’s gained 643 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 145 carries (4.4 YPC). That includes an impressive 150-yard performance last Saturday vs. Cal. Granted, Notre Dame’s front seven offers a significant step up in competition. Regardless, Ford just needs to get one-third of his Week 12 yardage tonight. That feels like a reasonable goal for the sophomore.
