BStanford Stadium gets a farewell of opposites: a playoff climber and a roster just trying to get to the locker room healthy. Notre Dame walks in at 9-2 and No. 9, playing for committee style points and Jeremiyah Love’s Heisman tape. Stanford closes a 4-7 slog, changing coaches and living off rivalry residue after the Cal win. That emotional juice meets one of the most lopsided stat profiles on the board. Below is my prediction for CFB Week 14’s football game between the Stanford Cardinal and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Stanford vs. Notre Dame prediction, preview
Notre Dame’s offense is built to front-run. The Irish average 41.4 points and 452.5 yards per game on 7.34 yards per snap. They sit top 10 in EPA per play and passing success rate, with C.J. Carr around 2,800 passing yards, 26 touchdowns, six interceptions and about a 68% completion rate. The ground game adds roughly 156.5 rushing yards per game at more than six yards per carry, with Love sitting near 1,300 rushing yards, seven-plus a pop and 17 rushing scores. Stanford’s defense allows 27.4 points and about 397.6 yards, including more than 240 through the air, with opponents completing roughly 66% and carving them for a huge volume of gains over 15 yards.
The trenches tilt the same direction. Notre Dame has allowed sacks on under 5% of dropbacks, giving up only a shade over one sack per game. Stanford’s defensive front is mid-pack in pressure while its offensive line has already surrendered 39 sacks, roughly 3.5 per game. Now that line draws a top-15 defense in both SP+ and EPA allowed, holding teams to 17.4 points and 312.3 yards per game. Stanford’s offense has crawled to 18.7 points and 305.1 yards per game on 4.72 yards per snap with a three-and-out rate near 40%. Sustained early drives are a wish, not a plan, when your protection leaks at that rate.
Notre Dame vs. Stanford pick, best bet
First-half scoring is where this bet really lives. Notre Dame ranks near the top nationally in first-half production, sitting in the low 20s per game before the break. They’re about top five in first-quarter scoring at roughly 10 points per opening frame, and more than half of their total scoring comes in the first 30 minutes. Stanford, by contrast, allows more than 37 points per game against ranked opponents, and Notre Dame is the best offense on the schedule. The most realistic first-half bands land with the Irish in the mid to high 20s and Stanford stuck between three and seven.
There are real objections. Notre Dame has been clunky in the red zone at times, finishing drives at a bottom-tier touchdown rate, and Stanford’s red-zone defense is one of its few strengths. A couple of short field goals instead of touchdowns can turn 28-3 into 20-3 and flirt with the number. But a first-half bet minimizes the mercy-kill problem; this is when Marcus Freeman is still calling the full menu, still hunting depth-chart reps through aggression, and still feeding Love’s stat line instead of bleeding clock.
I expect Notre Dame’s pass game to hit explosives early, Love to punish light boxes, and Stanford’s protection issues to create short fields. That script lands more often on something like 28-3, 31-7 or even 35-7 than on a sleepy 21-7. With the Irish profile as a front-running bully and Stanford dragging one of the weakest Power Four offenses into a top-15 defense, I am comfortable laying it early.
Best bet: Notre Dame 1H -18.5 (-105) at Stanford
