Valley Trophy night sets up like a stat trap for San Jose State’s offense. The Spartans look explosive on paper at 418.8 yards per game and 298.5 through the air, but the scoreboard keeps telling a different story. They are sitting at only 22.1 points per game with a -11 turnover margin, and now they hand the keys to a freshman quarterback against one of the best pass defenses in the conference. With the team total parked at 21.5, I want to bet that disconnect, not chase their yardage. Below is my prediction for CFB Week 14’s football game between the San Jose State Spartans and the Fresno State Bulldogs.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
SJSU vs. Fresno State prediction, preview
Fresno State’s defense is the problem here if you are holding a Spartans over ticket. The Bulldogs allow only 299.5 yards and 20.6 points per game, with a top-10 pass defense at 164.7 passing yards allowed. They have 19 takeaways and a +2 turnover margin, so they already tilt fields without any help from their offense. San Jose State’s whole profile is “move it, then blow it”: 44% on third down, almost 300 passing yards per night, but drives ending in interceptions, fumbles and empty red-zone trips. That is exactly the kind of offense that stalls out in the high teens against a disciplined coverage unit.
The quarterback switch makes the ceiling spicy but lowers the median. Walker Eget’s 3,058 passing yards and 17 touchdowns are off the board; Tama Amisone brings dual-threat juice but zero experience in a game where Fresno’s secondary can sit on routes and punish late throws. You still have Danny Scudero, Kyri Shoels and Leland Smith as a three-headed problem outside, but you are now asking a freshman to beat a top-10 pass defense often enough to get you to at least three touchdowns. With that -11 turnover history behind him, every scramble and off-platform shot is as likely to feed Fresno’s takeaway numbers as it is to unlock a big play.
Fresno State vs. SJSU pick, best bet
Game environment helps the under, too. Fresno’s offense is functional, not furious: 345.5 yards and 25.1 points per game, with E.J. Warner basically even at 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. They can lean into Rayshon “Speedy” Luke’s 663 rushing yards and 6.7 yards per carry against a defense allowing 148.7 on the ground, bleed clock and force San Jose State to put together long fields. Fewer possessions plus Fresno’s bend-but-don’t-break style means the Spartans probably need three full touchdown drives, not just a couple of short fields, to beat 21.5.
On the pricing, -135 is not pretty, but it matters that 21 is a key number. At 21.5, you cash every time San Jose State lands on 21 or lower, which covers a huge cluster of realistic outcomes: 17, 20 or 21. Slide that down to 20.5 and a very normal three-touchdown night becomes a loss. The juice at -135 implies a break-even around 57%, and I think the combination of Fresno’s coverage, San Jose State’s turnover issues and the new quarterback keeps the Spartans in the 14-to-20 range more often than that.
I expect San Jose State to move the ball, flash the wideouts and still get stuck short of three full touchdowns. Call it something like Fresno State 27, San Jose State 17, with one or two promising Spartans drives dying in the red zone or on a tipped ball.
Best bet: SJSU TT u21.5 total points (-135) vs. Fresno State
