Las Vegas keeps Auburn on the clock a little longer for a game that refuses to slow down on paper. St. John’s stays in the desert after pushing Iowa State to the final possession and then lighting Baylor on fire. Auburn just lived both extremes out here too, getting run over by Michigan and then trading blows with Oregon. Now the two offenses with the cleanest green lights share one floor at Michelob Ultra Arena, and the number hangs at 166.5 like a challenge. After the way these teams have played all month, I would rather bet on buckets than a sudden personality change. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Auburn Tigers and the St. John’s Red Storm.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Auburn vs. St. John’s prediction, preview
St. John’s is living in the mid-90s for a reason. They’re scoring 95.3 points per game, with more than 19 assists and over 41 rebounds, and they have already cracked 96 four times in six outings. Bryce Hopkins gives them about 17 points on well over 50% shooting as a versatile hub, Zuby Ejiofor adds roughly 14 and seven with interior playmaking, and Dillon Mitchell runs the lane at nearly 74% from the field. Oziyah Sellers has turned Vegas into his personal shooting gallery, stacking back-to-back games with five made threes and more than twenty points. They just hung 96 on Baylor on 57% shooting and 11-for-22 from deep, and that game still could have gone higher if they’d cleaned the defensive glass.
Auburn answers with volume and velocity. Even after running into Michigan, they sit around 89 points per night with more than 40 rebounds and almost ten steals. Keyshawn Hall is putting up 21 and nine as a bully wing who drags defenders into space. Tahaad Pettiford pushes tempo and pulls up early; he just dropped twenty-plus on Oregon and scored in double figures again when everything else melted against Michigan. Bruce Pearl’s guards protect the ball better than their reputation suggests, living around single-digit turnovers while hunting in passing lanes. When their transition defense fails, games explode anyway; when it holds, their own offense tends to find the eighties without much help.
St. John’s vs. Auburn pick, best bet
Vegas already gave us a preview of what these styles look like under tournament lights. St. John’s totals against Iowa State and Baylor landed at 165 and 177. Auburn’s two finished at 157 and 174. None of those results required insane overtime luck or fifty-percent nights from both teams; they were just the natural consequence of early-clock jumpers, long rebounds, and defenses that leak in transition. Baylor outrebounded St. John’s 48-34 with 26 offensive boards and still gave up 96. Michigan hammered Auburn 102-72 while dropping 51 rebounds and a 29-3 fast-break edge. Those are not box scores you suddenly expect to morph into a half-court rock fight.
You can sketch an under, but it gets thin quickly. Third game in a tight stretch, legs are heavy, and both coaches have tape of their transition defense getting embarrassed. Rick Pitino and Bruce Pearl can absolutely walk into the locker room and demand more discipline, more set possessions, more bodies behind the ball. For 166.5 to be wrong by margin, though, you need both teams to embrace that script at the same time and actually execute it. St. John’s has leaned harder into offense every time it has been challenged. Auburn’s most reliable way to score is still to turn you over and run. Neither identity points toward willingly grinding this into the low seventies.
I think the market is daring us to pretend this is a different sport than the one they have been playing. St. John’s brings a top-ten offense, a heater from deep, and a real weakness on the defensive glass that feeds second-chance points. Auburn brings pace, downhill guards, and a defense that just allowed a hundred plus in this same style of game. That combination has put almost every tournament total in this pod into the 160s or higher. I’m not stepping in front of that on vibes alone.
Give me the over 166.5, with St. John’s and Auburn racing somewhere toward a 90-82 type final that looks exactly like the basketball they have played all month.
Best bet: Auburn vs. St. John’s o166.5 total points (-110)
