Bowling Green and UMass meet with different kinds of embarrassment hanging over them. The Falcons are collapsing after a 3–3 start; UMass is trying to dodge a winless MAC return. Pride, jobs, and winter film sessions sit on this chilly Amherst afternoon. Below is my prediction for CFB Week 13’s football game between the UMass Minutemen and the Bowling Green Falcons.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
UMass vs. Bowling Green prediction, preview
I want my starting point to be UMass with the ball, because that is where this game dies. They’re at 10.8 points per game, 243.5 yards, and 3.81 yards per snap, dead last nationally. That offense hits Bowling Green’s best unit: a defense allowing 25.2 points, 348.1 yards, and only 33.6% on third down. UMass moves the chains on 29.4% of their own thirds and has scored only eight touchdowns on 24 red-zone trips. If Bowling Green just plays to season averages, UMass is living between seven and thirteen points. AJ Hairston is sitting on 957 yards with four TDs, four picks, and 49.5% completions, barely six yards per attempt. Brandon Hood’s 359 yards on 93 carries work out to 3.9 per rush, and Jacquon Gibson’s 53 catches for 478 yards have produced thin explosiveness relative to volume.
The worry with a favorite this size is always their own scoring ceiling, and Bowling Green’s offense is ugly on paper. They sit at 18.3 points, 297.6 yards, and 4.6 yards per snap, with only 153.4 passing yards per game. But this is the softest defense they’ve seen: UMass allows 436.4 yards and 38.0 points, with 216.2 rushing yards surrendered at about 5.0 per carry. The secondary gives up 8.4 yards per attempt and nearly half of opponent third downs. Bowling Green already owns a time-of-possession edge at 31:16; against a unit this bad, their baseline efficiency inflates almost by default. Drew Pyne’s 62.3% completions and roughly six yards per attempt get a massive boost against that 8.4 yards allowed per throw. Austyn Dendy brings 378 yards on 86 carries, 4.4 per rush with three scores, while Jyrin Johnson is at 35 grabs, 446 yards, 12.7 per catch. Gideon Lampron’s 109 tackles and double-digit TFLs are the heartbeat behind those run numbers that squeeze UMass into third-and-long.
Bowling Green vs. UMass pick, best bet
There is a real counterargument, and it starts with Bowling Green’s five-game slide and locker-room noise. Laying more than two touchdowns with a 3–8 team that hasn’t cracked thirty during the skid is uncomfortable. UMass has the desperation angle, plays at home, and weird things happen in grim late-season spots. But every structural lever favors the Falcons: UMass is –6 in turnover margin, bleeds 49% on third down, and never controls the ball. Bowling Green doesn’t need explosives; they just need their defense to keep winning the early downs that UMass always loses.
Market wise, -14.5 with a total of 44.5 projects something like 29–15. That feels generous to the Minutemen relative to their season, which has hovered around a minus-thirty average margin. Bowling Green’s profile isn’t Ohio’s, but UMass has allowed 38 or more in six of seven and still can’t protect its defense with sustained drives. The Falcons grade as a below-average MAC team; UMass has looked FCS level against the same schedule. This number plays more like asking Bowling Green to be competent for four quarters than asking them to dominate.
The game should tilt toward a methodical Bowling Green script. I expect the Falcons leaning on Austyn Dendy and a patient ground attack, taking layup throws for Drew Pyne and letting that defense choke off first-down runs. UMass will live in second-and-nine, third-and-long, and short fields eventually stack for the favorite as time of possession skews. No style points needed; just a slow suffocation and a scoreboard that keeps stretching.
I’ll lay the 14.5 with Bowling Green and call it Falcons 31, UMass 10.
Best bet: Bowling Green -14.5 (-110) at UMass
