Las Vegas gives them the same floor, the same tired walls, and a very different kind of pressure. Oregon watched Auburn sprint away late. San Diego State got shoved out of the gym by Michigan. Now the two wounded brands share a neutral arena that suddenly feels like a truth serum. This is where you sort out which flaws are structural and which were Michigan-and-Auburn problems. On short rest, with scouting locked in, there’s a side that still knows exactly where its easy points come from. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Oregon Ducks and the San Diego State Aztecs.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Oregon vs. SDSU prediction, preview
Oregon’s shape is clearer. Across five games they sit at 74 points and 70 allowed with a real rebounding advantage, 42.2 boards per night against 34.2. Bittle anchors that interior, averaging 17 points, 9.2 rebounds and 2.6 blocks while keeping their rim protection near the top of the country. Shelstad gives them 16 points and 5.8 assists as a true usage hub, and Simpkins has stretched defenses by hitting 47.2% from the floor. Even in the loss to Auburn, Oregon found 46 rebounds and nine threes; the issue was 18 turnovers and a rough shooting night from their ball-dominant guard. Those problems are real, but they are the kind of correctable mistakes that film and a calmer second night usually soften.
San Diego State’s issues cut closer to the roster. On paper 77.8 points and 38.4% from three sound healthy, yet the bones look brittle when you add context. That scoring line includes a 108-point overtime shootout at Troy and a blowout win over Idaho State; against real length, they just managed 54 points on 27.4% shooting and watched Michigan walk them to the rim. They are slightly negative on the backboard at 36.0 rebounds versus 37.5 allowed, and losing Dixon-Waters and Oden has thinned their wing rotation and switch options. When Michigan scored 38-12 in the paint and turned those 17 turnovers into easy runouts, it looked less like a one-off disaster and more like what happens when this current version of the Aztecs runs into a long frontcourt. Oregon brings that size again, just with less polish than Michigan.
SDSU vs. Oregon pick, best bet
You can argue for pride and familiarity; Brian Dutcher’s teams almost never wear back-to-back embarrassments, and this core just saw Oregon in Vegas last year when the Ducks won 78-68. Oregon is also sitting on an 0-5 start against the number, and Shelstad’s decision-making late against Auburn was shaky enough to invite doubt. If the Aztec guards simply hit open threes at something like their 38.4% season rate and slash the turnover line, this can absolutely land inside one possession. The problem is that every path leans on them cleaning up both the turnovers and the rebounding gap overnight against another aggressive front line.
I still want the Ducks. Oregon does not need perfection to cover a short number; they need to lean into their existing identity. A lineup built around Bittle, Kwame Evans Jr. and Sean Stewart should bully the glass against a San Diego State group already underwater there and just came off a 49-34 rebounding deficit plus 38-12 in the lane. Their season-long rebounding edge and San Diego State’s 16 turnovers per game match neatly with what Auburn and Michigan just exploited. If Oregon simply trims the giveaways back toward their usual 13 and keeps Simpkins in that 20-point zone, they can pressure a tired Aztec defense inside and out without needing a shooting outlier. The total in the mid-140s feels almost right given both teams’ tempo and the quick turnaround; the side looks softer than the number suggests.
I grade this more like Oregon by four or five than a coin flip. I am comfortable laying up to -4 before I start worrying about closing-line tax. Give me Oregon -3.5, projecting a Ducks 76, Aztecs 69 win.
Best bet: Oregon -2.5 (-105) vs. SDSU
